Richard
George Jones, b May 15, 1809 in King George County, Virginia, d July 20, 1876 at
Hog Island (present-day Roseland), Falls County, Texas and buried in Calvary
Cemetery at Marlin, Texas - was a son of Stanfield and Elizabeth (Doggett) Jones
- natives of Virginia. Richard was married ca 1831 in Caroline County, Virginia,
to Sarah Jane Brewer, b September 13, 1813 in Prince William County, Virginia, d
October 21, 1882 in Reagan and buried in Calvary Cemetery - a daughter of
Charles Brewer and his wife, formerly a Miss Hampton, also natives of Virginia.
Richard
and Sarah Jane went to Caroline County, Virginia after their marriage, along
with his parents; and they were plantation owners. In 1859, Richard and Sarah
sold their Virginia estate and sailed for Texas with their eleven children - all
born in Virginia. They landed at Galveston, went to Houston, and then proceeded
to Navasota, where Richard operated a hotel for several years. It was there that
four of their sons enlisted in the Confederate States Army. From Navasota, the
family moved to Millican, Bryan, and subsequently settled at Hog Island in Falls
County.
Richard
had been both a farmer and bricklayer in Virginia; and he had a brickyard near
the Falls of the Brazos River in Falls County. His bricks still exist in the
area.
The
eleven children of Richard George and Sarah Jane (Brewer) Jones were:
Napoleon
Bonaparte Jones, b August 20, 1832 in Caroline County, Virginia, enlisted in
Hood's Brigade of the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. He married
first to Mary Sorrell, and married second to Sue Hodges - having twelve
children: Alexander, Val Verde, Belle, Andrew, Bertha, Alice, Rosa, John, Sue,
Robert, Minnie, and Willie Jones.
Sebastian Stanfield Jones, b April 6, 1834, d June 9, 1901 and buried in Hog
Island Cemetery - enlisted in Louisiana in Speight's Regiment of the Confederate
States Army. He married Frances E. Prewitt, b June 22, 1842 - a daughter of
Joseph and Ann (Jones) Prewitt. Ann (Jones) Prewitt was a daughter of Watts
Jones. Sebastian and Frances had Joseph, Stanfield, Charles P., Stella, Annie,
Luther, and James R. Jones, b September 9, 1867, d June 1, 1888.
Columbia
Wilson Jones, b February 23, 1836 - taught school in Virginia, and was never
married.
Walter
Scott Jones, b March 29, 1838 - was in Hood's Brigade of the Confederate States
Army, and died in Virginia during the Civil War.
Richard
Hampton Jones, b April 29, 1840, d June 27, 1894 and buried in Calvary Cemetery
in Marlin- enlisted in Sibley's Brigade, Tom Green's Regiment, of the
Confederate States Army - serving in Arizona, New Mexico, and Louisiana during
the Civil War. He married first to Lucy Prewitt, and second to L. Canarian. He
had Sallie, Leonard A., b November 11, 1874, d February 21, 1909 and buried in
Calvary Cemetery; Sidney T., b April 19, 1876, and buried in Calvary Cemetery in
Marlin; and Katie.
Sidney
Jones, b June 23,1842 - no further information.
Ann
Elizabeth Jones, b November 21, 1845, d May 4, 1916 and buried in Calvary
Cemetery in Marlin - married first to John Goodwin, married second to J. Smith,
married third to J. Price, and married fourth to G. T. Gentry.
Sarah
Frances Jones, b May 2, 1847 who married G. I. Goodwin.
James K.
Polk Jones, b January 21, 1850 - died unmarried.
William
Poindexter Jones, b May 9, 1852 - married Willie Salina Riley.
Byrd
Louis Jones, b 1858 in Virginia - no further information.
