WILLIAM HOMMEL
William
Hommel, b November 7, 1855 in Danzig, Germany, d June 18, 1943 and buried in
Oakwood Cemetery in Waco, McLennan County, Texas - arrived in Galveston, Texas
from Germany in 1871, coming to Otto, Falls County, Texas to work on a ranch
which was owned by Baron Bathman Von Helwig, the same year.
In 1884,
William was married in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas to Rosa Hahn, b December
26, 1860 in Wusttemberg, Germany, d December 6, 1942 in Waco, and buried in
Oakwood Cemetery there. By the time of his marriage, William Hommel had
purchased a farm, and it was there that he brought his bride. He helped to
establish the Evangelical Church at Mettina, where worship services were held
twice a month. The congregation met in the Hommel home, until a building was
erected in 1889 - serving for both, church and school purposes for thirteen
years. At that time, the school district was transferred to Otto.
In 1921,
William and Rosa Hommel moved to Waco, where they both died. They were the
parents of eight children.
