JOSEPH CLARK HOLLOWAY
Joseph Clark Holloway, b January 20,1873 in Pineapple, Alabama, d
February 11, 1965 and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin - was the son of
Joseph Newton and Terressa (Beard) Holloway, who came to Marlin in 1884.
Joseph Clark Holloway (called "Jody") was educated in the Marlin public
schools, and later "punched cattle' for Battle, Kyser, & Haynes, as well as
clerking and handling livestock for Levy Brothers. He accompanied the first
train load of cattle to leave Falls County by rail, for the stockyards in the
Middle West.
In 1897, "Jody" was married to Annie Lou Oltorf, b November 7, 1878 in
Marlin, d July 10, 1952 and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin - a daughter of
Thomas Clifton and Sarah (Calvert) Oltorf.
In 1898, Mr. Jody opened a men's furnishings store, in partnership with
Bolivar Nettles, and the business was known as "Nettles & Holloway," until
Nettles died. Mr. Jody continued to operate the business as Holloway Brothers,
until his son was able to join him in business, at which time it was renamed
"Holloway & Son." The business operated in Marlin, Texas continuously, until the
son retired in 1975.
The Holloways were members of the Baptist Church of Marlin, and he also
served on the Marlin School Board. They were the parents of two children:
Tallulah Holloway - married Van B. Harris, b January 3, 1893, d February
8, 1961 and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin. He was a 1st Lieutenant in 133
Machine Gun Battalion, during World War I. They had no children, and Tallulah
continues to reside in Marlin.
Thomas Oltorf Holloway (called "Oltorf'), b May 13, 1910 in Marlin, d May
4, 1985 and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin-married March 14, 1937 to Sarah
Adair Seymour (called "Sallie"), and they lived in Marlin all their married
life. Oltorf graduated in 1928 from Marlin High School, and then attended Texas
A&M University at College Station, and Southwestern University at Georgetown. He
became a partner with his father in Holloway & Son - a men's clothing store -
and after his father's death, he continued in the business until his own
retirement in 1975. Oltorf was a member of First Baptist Church in Marlin; while
Sallie maintained an active membership in First Presbyterian Church of Marlin.
She established the First Presbyterian Church Kindergarten, which was in
operation for many years, until 1985.
In June 1944, Oltorf enlisted in the U.S. Navy - holding the rank of RM
3/C on an LST in the South Pacific, during World War II. On the "homefront,"
while Oltorf was in the service, Sallie spent her free time organizing
entertainment for service men stationed at Camp Hood, near Killeen.
Thomas Oltorf and Sarah Adair (Seymour) Holloway were the parents of one
son:
Joseph Seymour Oltorf- who married and has
two children, and resides in Waco, Texas. After the death of his grandfather, he
joined his father in the family business of Holloway & Son, until 1975 when
Oltorf retired, and the business was closed.
Sallie continues to be active in the First Presbyterian Church of Marlin, and
remains in the family there.
