PULASKI PINKNEY HODGES
Pulaski Pinkney Hodges, b 1813 in Georgia, d July 5, 1885 in Falls County
Texas - a son of William Elias Hodges, and a brother of Homer Virgil Hodges who
also came to Falls County. He married ca 1838 in Alabama to Margaret Jane
Bradley, b April 20, 1809 in South Carolina, d May 22, 1889 in Falls County,
Texas - a daughter of William Bradley, who died in Alabama, and Julia A.
Bradley, b December 11, 1825, d September 24, 1898, and buried at Live Oak
Cemetery in Falls County, Texas.
Pulaski Pinkney and his wife are recorded as the first to have been
buried in the Live Oak Cemetery which is located on land donated by George
Aylett and Elias Richard Hodges for burial purposes. The graves of Pulaski P.
and Margaret Jane Hodges are enclosed in a wrought iron fence. Although recorded
as "Margaret" on the 1870 Census of Falls County, Pulaski's wife's tombstone has
her as "Mary Jane." It is not known whether she was Margaret Jane or Mary Jane
(Bradley) Hodges, but this biography will refer to her as "Margaret."
Pulaski Pinkney and Margaret Jane (Bradley) Hodges were the parents of
three sons and one daughter:
William Hodges, b ca 1839 in Alabama, was killed in the Civil War, as a
member of the Confederate States Army.
Margaret Hodges, b 1840 in Alabama, married a Mr. Fleming, who died
before April 1871. I
Robert A. Hodges, b 1842 in Alabama, married in October 1870 to
Carolina (maiden name unknown), b 1852 in Alabama, and moved to Oklahoma.
James Josiah Hodges, b August 11, 1844 in Alabama,
d February 16, 1918, married Annie McCain, b March 6, 1861, d July 11, 1939.
Jane Hodges, b 1851 in Alabama, married Dr. Arthur F. Belo, and moved
back to Alabama. Dr. Belo practiced medicine at Camden, Rupee, and Live Oak -
all names of the same community in Falls County, Texas. He was a brother of
Colonel Alfred H. Belo, who started publication of The Galveston News,
and then The Dallas News - which today owns radio and television
stations, and publishes the annual Texas Almanac.
The families of Pulaski P. and Homer V. Hodges came from Alabama to Texas
- by boat from Mobile to Galveston -
and then on to Falls County, Texas, where they settled.
