RAYMOND LEANDER HILES

 

     Raymond Leander Hiles, b June 23, 1894 in Garden City, Kansas, d December 8, 1957 in Dallas, Texas and buried in Woodland Cemetery in Rosebud, Falls County, Texas - was the eldest of four children of Henry and Mary Eleanor (Willis) Hiles who moved from Kansas to Mena, Arkansas when Raymond was young. After spending his childhood in Arkansas, he moved to Texas, as did his brother, Willis Hiles, who taught school in the Stranger Community several years, married Minna Mae Simpson and had one son, Willis Hiles, Jr., b ca 1935, who later became known as William Simpson. Garner when adopted by his stepfather.

 

     Raymond L. Hiles received degrees in Education and Divinity from Yale University, The University of Texas, Hendrix College, and Southern Methodist University. He served as Superintendent of Schools in Kosse, Limestone County, Texas, and in Georgetown, Williamson County, Texas. When the United States entered World War I, Raymond was commissioned in 1918 - being discharged on April 15, 1919 as a Second Lieutenant. He re-enlisted during World War II in 1941- serving as Military Governor of Cologne, Augsburg, and Swaben, Germany - being discharged in 1946 with the rank of Colonel.

 

     On June 23, 1925 at the First Methodist Church in Rosebud, Texas, Raymond married Winnifred Henrietta Clark, b October 26, 1899 in Rosebud, d October 14, 1972 and buried by her husband - the eldest of three children of Daniel Curtis and Frances Veronica (Montford) Clark. Henrietta graduated from Texas Wesleyan College in 1924, and taught school in Georgetown and Killeen, Texas. She was active in church affairs until her death.

 

     Raymond and Henrietta had two children:

     Curtis Clark Hiles, b August 31,1932 in Temple, d October 19, 1980.

     Mary Frances Hiles, b March 8, 1938 in George- town, Texas - married Thomas Charles Glass.

     Mr. Raymond Hiles and Marjorie Evelyn Penglaze (Born in 1901 in Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire, UK) were married in July 1919 in Edinburgh, Scotland.  Raymond and Marjorie later divorced.  They had one son, my father, John Lionel Hiles (nicknamed Paddy) who was born in Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire, UK.   

     John Lionel Hiles married Joan Henning Russell from the UK. They live in Austin, Texas and have four children, David Russell Henning Hiles,  Kathleen Marjorie Hiles, Elizabeth Shelagh Hiles and Wendy Jane Hiles.

     Raymond’s other siblings were Robert E. Hiles; born June 13, 1902; died March 12, 1987 in Arlington, Virginia and Juanita Hiles; born 5 Jan 1898, died 1 Jul 1972.  Both are buried in Brearley Cemetery, Dardanelle, Yell County, Arkansas.
