HETHERINGTON, JOHN MONROE

John Monroe Hetherington, b. May 12, 1844 in Claiborne, Monroe County,
Alabama, d. November 6, 1914 at Reagan, Falls County, Texas, was the
second son of John H. and Rebecca (Kile) Hetherington. He enlisted
in Company H, 42nd Alabama Infantry, and was mustered into the
Confederate States Army on May 26, 1862 at Columbus, Mississippi.
When John Monroe returned after the Civil War, he courted and married
on November 6, 1867, the 16-year-old Margaret Ann Broughton, b.
November 16, 1851 of Monroeville, Alabama, d. of pneumonia in her
in Reagan, Falls County, Texas on January 10, 1916-a daughter
of Charles Richard and Mary R. (Snell) Broughton who were large
plantation owners in Alabama. John Monroe and Margaret Ann
(Broughton) Hetherington were both buried in Covington Cemetery at
Reagan, where several of their descendants are also buried.
For about two years after their marriage, John Monroe and Margaret Ann lived
on the Hetherington farm, then moved to a 200-acre farm given to
them by her parents, where they resided until 1885 when they wold
out and moved to Reagan, Falls County, Texas where John's brother
William George Hetherington, had settled in 1883 with his wife,
Susan M. (Broughton). Traveling with John Monroe and Margaret Ann
from Alabama in 1885 were her maternal aunt and uncle (see Snell and
McCoy biographies).
John Monroe and Margaret Ann (Broughton) Hetherington had six children: John
Charles Hetherington, b. October 18, 1868, married Frances Emma
Tanner; Edward Nathaniel Hetherington, b. December 20, 1870, married
Lillie Valeria McCants; Mary Rebecca Hetherington, b. February 28,
1873, married John Preston Tillery; Sam Hetherington, b. January 3,
1875, married first to Rosa Ritter and second to Mamie Carter;
Margaret Hetherington, b. August 28, 1877, married George Wallace
Shaunfield; and George Kile Hetherington, b. December 31, 1879,
married Frances Herridge.
