GEORGE KILE HETHERINGTON

 

 

     George Kile Hetherington, b December 31,1879 at Monroeville, Alabama, was the youngest child of John Monroe and Margaret Ann (Broughton) Hetherington, and came to Texas with his parents at the age of five rears. He loved hunting and fishing, supplying the family with much game. He finished Reagan High School and became a skillful farm hand. His record for one day of cotton picking was 784 lbs. of seed cotton - more than half a bale. He took nephews and nieces camping, and guided them in moral and safety conduct.

     George Kile bought a new buggy and a high-trotting horse to do his courting, and on December 17, 1905, he married Frances Herridge, b February 29, 1884 in Llano County, Texas. They had five children:

George William Hetherington, b October 11,1906, married on February 18, 1932 to Bertie Adams and had two children: Martha Ann, b November 10, 1933, and George William, Jr., b February 5,1937. The family moved to Texas City, Texas.

     Travis Monroe Heatherington, b February 20, 1908, was a West Point graduate and a Colonel in the U.S. Army Air Corps. On May: 3, 1940, he married Louise Herridge and they had two children: Susan Elaine, b August 29, 1942, and Mary Caroline, b August 15, 1943, retiring as a Brigadier General in the 1970's.

     Evelyn Marguerite Hetherington, b November 2, 1915, married on October 5, 1935 to Joseph Funderburk, and had four children: William Kile Funderburk, b August 10, 1936; Harold Monroe Funderburk, b May 24,1939, Joseph Durwood Funderburk, b September 28, 1940; and Ruth Elaine Funderburk, b December 10, 1951.

     Mary Ethel Hetherington, b August 12, 1917, married on December 7, 1942 to John H. Matthews, and had two sons: Samuel Stephen Matthews, b July 5, 1946; and John Michael Matthews, b September 17, 1951.

     Harold Monroe Hetherington, b June 10, 1910, d June 10, 1927 when a team he was driving ran away with a hay rake.

     George Kile and Frances (Herridge) Hetherington died after 1952 - long and respected members of the community surrounding Reagan.
