JOHN BALDWIN HENLEY, SR.
John Baldwin Henley, Sr., b November 11,1877 in Clarke County, Alabama, d
July 16, 1956 in Marlin and buried in Calvary Cemetery -
was a son of John Monroe and Frances (called "Fannie" DeWitt) Henley )f Clarke
County, Alabama. "Fannie" was the eldest child of James Lee and Mary (Stutts)
DeWitt, Sr., who were born in Wilcox County, Alabama. The grand- rather,
Reverend L. L. DeWitt was born 1805 in South Carolina.
John Monroe and Frances (DeWitt) Henley came to Falls County, Texas with
their eldest child, John Baldwin Henley, in 1879 - along with her sister, Alta
Elzera DeWitt, and her brother, James Lee DeWitt, Jr. They came down the
Tombigbee and Alabama Rivers to Mobile, Alabama, and then by boat to Galveston,
and finishing the trip to Falls County, by train.
The family lived in Falls County for twenty years; and in 1900, the
parents and younger children moved to Frederick, Oklahoma.
In 1897, John Baldwin Henley was married to Velma Viola Smith, d
September 2, 1955 - a daughter of Floyd Erastus and Laura (Parsons) Smith. Floyd
was a brother of Kate (Smith) McClanahan; and Laura was the youngest daughter of
John and Catherine (Davis) Parsons - pioneers to Falls County. Floyd was a
merchant in Marlin.
John Baldwin and Velma Henley lived in Mc- Clanahan, Lott, Chilton, and
the Marlin areas of Falls County until he was forced to retire from farming.
Their last was on the Rock Dam Road, where Velma died; and John Baldwin
lived only ten months longer. They were the parents often children:
Eva Mae Henley, b December 9, 1898, d September 2, 1955 - married
December 3, 1917 to William LaFayette Crites.
Daisy Henley, b April 4, 1901, d January 2, 1980 - married Fred Holland,
Sr., who lives in Marlin.
James Floyd Henley, b May 13, 1904, d 1963- married September 2, 1933 to
Helen Earl Hill.
Clifton B. Henley, b February 13, 1907, d November 25, 1941 - married
June 10, 1933 to Dorothy Greer.
Audivee Cache Henley, b January 20, 1910 - married June 17, 1941
to Louise Malone, and lives in Brownwood, Texas.
Frank David Henley, b March 4,1912 - married November 12, 1937 to Lillian
Goonan, and lives in Waxahachie, Texas.
Zula Henley - a twin, b January 14, 1914, died in infancy.
Eula Henley - a twin, b January 14, 1914, d March 24, 1942.
Jacie Rose Henley, b June 3, 1917-married April 18, 1943 to Harold
Douglas Palmer, and lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
John Baldwin Henley, Jr., b March 12, 1920- married August 26, 1945 to
Leatrice Ward - a daughter of Fred and Iva Deoma (Glover) Ward.
Mr. and Mrs. Henley have many descendants living all over the United
States, and in Falls County, Texas
