MARSHALL AUGUSTUS HAYES, M.D.
Marshall Augustus Hayes, M.D., b 1860 in Walton County, Georgia, d 1943.
His place of death and burial is not known. Dr. Hayes received his M. D. degree
on March 3, 1881 from Southern Medical College in Atlanta, Georgia, and in 1885
he settled at Rupee, Falls County, Texas, where he established his medical
practice in Rupee, Travis, and Lott. On March 11, 1890 in Falls County, Texas,
Dr. Hayes married Cora L. Scott, b ca 1865 in Georgia - a daughter of Samuel
Hunter Scott, b March 12, 1837 in Georgia, d April 4, 1910 and buried in
Phillips Cemetery at Travis, and his wife, Isabella J. Scott, b October 16, 1838
in Georgia, d October 7, 1937 and buried in Phillips Cemetery at Travis. Samuel
Hunter Scott is believed to be a son of Robert Scott, b 1812 in North Carolina,
who was listed on the 1870 Census of Falls County, Texas with Elizabeth, b 1835
in Georgia, and thirteen children. No further in- formation on this family.
Dr. Marshall A. and Cora L. (Scott) Hayes are reported to have taken the
first train that linked Lott to Waco when they were married. They took a trip
back to Georgia, returning in 1891 to Falls County, and built their in
Lott, Texas. They were active in the Lott community affairs the rest of their
lives.
Dr. and Mrs. Hayes reared six children- all graduates of Lott High
School: Dr. Basil A. Hayes, J. O. Hayes, Irmine (Hayes) Stevens, Reese L. Hayes,
and Marshall A. Hayes, Jr., b ca 1908 who married Lucile Dunagan ca 1932.
Marshall A. Hayes, Jr. was named the administrator of his father's Will,
which was written March 20, 1942 and filed for probate on August 17, 1943.
Marshall, Jr. received his degree in science and geology. He was a teacher in
Lott High School during and after World War II, and a geologist who is credited
with the discovery and drilling of the oil field at Lott. At present, he is in
business with his eldest son, Marshall A. Hayes, III, as oil operators in Hayes
Enterprises. Marshall A. and Lucile (Dunagan) Hayes, Jr. had six children:
Marshall A. Hayes, III, b ca 1933 in Lott, Sharon (Hayes) Scanlon, b ca
1935, was an American Airlines Stewardess before her marriage - now has several
children; John Lowell Hayes, b ca 1937; Timothy Hayes, b ca 1939; James O.
Hayes, b 1941; and Janice (Hayes) Norris, b ca 1946 and is married.
The four eldest children of Marshall A. and Lucile Hayes, Jr. were
graduates of Lott High School, but Marshall and Lucile moved to East Texas for a
time, where the youngest children graduated, and where Lucile died. Marshall A.,
Jr. and Marshall A., III returned to reside in Lott, where they continue in
their business, and make their in the residence built by his parents. The
Hayes family have been active in Falls County affairs for over 100 years.
