JONATHAN HARLAN

 

 Surnames: HARLAN, HENRY, GEORGE, MITCHELL, WRIGHT, WALLACE, AMAN, BELL, LEWIS, ERSKINE, HUDSON, CASTLEBERRY, BOWMAN, ANDERSON, QUARTOM (sp?).

    Jonathan Harlan, b October 21, 1828, in Parke County, Indiana, d March 23, 1891, at Thornton, Limestone County, Texas and buried there -- was a son of Dr. Isaiah and Nancy (Henry) Harlan, who brought their family to Texas in the Fall of 1834.  When his father died in 1847, Jonathan was the eldest son at home, and when the mother died in 1852, he was named the administrator of the parent's estates.  Jonathan lived in Montgomery County, Texas, where he married first on January 8, 1857, to Emily George, who died on May 24, 1860, at Blue Ridge, Falls County, Texas after their only son was born.
    George Isaiah Harlan, b May 2, 1860, in Falls County, d November 22, 1867, and buried by his mother in Blue Ridge Cemetery.  Neither he nor his mother have tombstones.
    Jonathan had settled his young wife on his portion of his father's land in East Falls Co., soon after his marriage, and remained there until 1885.  He enlisted April 15, 1862, in the Company F, 20th Texas Infantry, of the Confederate States Army---his nephew, John Newton Mitchell---son of Memnon A. and Martha (Harlan) Mitchell----enlisting with him.  They served other places----in Arkansas, where the nephew died; and Jonathan was later in the battle to retake Galveston from the Yankees.
    On February 6, 1866 in Limestone Co., Texas, Jonathan Harlan was married a 2nd time to Mary Elizabeth Wright, b January 20, 1848 in Hempstead County, Arkansas, d August 17, 1922 in Thornton, Limestone County, Texas and buried there -- a daughter of Baptist minister, Reverend Benjamin Lee Wright, b August 11, 1819 in Lincoln County, Georgia, and his wife, Martha R. Wallace, b January 20, 1822 in Arkansas, who were residing in Limestone County by 1860.
    Jonathan Harlan served a number of years as a School Trustee at Blue Ridge, Texas, and the children of Jonathan and his second wife, Mary Elizabeth (Wright) Harlan, were all born there before the family moved away in 1885:
    Silas B. Harlan, b November 10, 1867, d before 1907 and buried in Thornton Cemetery, Limestone County, Texas -- was not married.
    Martha Harlan, born and died in 1869 in Blue Ridge, Falls County, Texas -- probably buried in Blue Ridge.
    William Lee Harlan, b August 22, 1870, d 1921 in Ellis County, Texas.  "Lee" married to Willie (maiden name unknown), and a son, Jesse, and a daughter, Arley, who were both unmarried in 1921.
    John Everett Harlan, b January 12, 1873, died (date unknown), and buried Thornton Cemetery.
    Isaiah Elijah Harlan, (called "Buggy"), b March 10, 1876, d ca 1946 in or near Hines, Texas, and buried there.  He married Maggie Quartom (sp?), and had seven children: Lester, Marion. Lucy Mae, Bendal, Juanita, Gussie, and Cyril Harlan, who died as a baby and was buried in Thornton Cemetery.
    Frank Burleson Harlan, b May 10, 1878, d 1932 at Thornton and buried in Thornton Cemetery -- was a farmer and a fireman at the Gin.  He married ca 1903 to Georgia Aman, b 1884, d 1967, and buried in Thornton Cemetery -- daughter of Jack and E. A. Aman, and they had James Parnell Harlan, b May 31, 1907, who married Katie Lee Bell, b July 31, 1913, d May 10, 1982 -- a daughter of Albert Hilliary and Florence Mary (Lewis) Bell, and granddaughter of James Augustus and Amanda (Erskine) Bell -- all buried in Garrett Cemetery at Stranger, Falls County, Texas.  The three children of James Parnell and Katie Lee (Bell) Harlan were James Lee, Melvin, Eunice Marie Harlan.  The second child of Frank Burelson and Georgia (Aman) Harlan was Charles Harlan, b September 3, 1909, who resides in Thornton, Texas, and married Ruthie Mae Hudson, of Thornton.  The last two children were "Dock" Harlan, b ca 1911, d of diphtheria about age 6 years; and Julia Harlan, b November 15, 1915, who resides in Conroe, Texas, who married first to Alton Castleberry, and second to Jake Bowman.
    Marion Penn Harlan, (called "Pet"), b August 27, 1880, died of a gunshot wound in a hunting accident at age twenty years.  He was not married, and was buried in Thornton Cemetery.
    Lucy Josephine Harlan, b December 29, 1883, died at Reklaw, Texas -- married Andrew Peter Anderson, and had one daughter, Allene Anderson, who died in an automobile accident.
