Holman Kendal Hancock, b January 16, 1869 in Falls
County, Texas, d July 16, 1926 at Stranger and buried in Stranger Cemetery,
Falls County, Texas - was a son of Samuel B.
and Louisa Jane (Adair) Hancock, but was reared by his
stepfather, Harris Kay, and is mother.
Holman was married on December 12, 1890 at Stranger
to Gertrude Eliza Garrett - a twin of James Thomas
Garrett, b November 25, 1869 at Stranger, d November 18, 1941 and buried by her
husband in Stranger Cemetery - a daughter of Robert
Jasper and Mary ("Mollie" Smith) Garrett. After their
marriage, Holman and Gertrude moved to Knickerbocker, Tom Green County, Texas,
along with her twin and several her family members, to take care of their
father's ranching business. After about five years, the Han
cocks returned to Stranger, where Holman purchased the shares of his
step-father's estate from his step- brothers and step-sisters - the Kays. When
Gertrude's father died in 1918, they were able to build a new home, and Holman
purchased the Stranger General Store from Floyd Swinnea, which was operated by
different members of the family for over thirty years.
Holman and Gertrude were members of the Baptist Church at Stranger, where
Holman served as a Deacon and an Elder. He also was a Trustee of the Stranger
School.
Holman Kendal and Gertrude Eliza (Garrett) Hancock reared four of their
seven children:
Robert Bertran Hancock, b September 26, 1891, d December 11, 1891 in
Knickerbocker, Tom Green County, Texas.
Inez Gertrude Hancock, b May 18, 1893 in Knickerbocker, Tom Green County,
Texas, d December 19, 1978 in Woodland Hills, California while visiting a
daughter, and was buried in Nogales Cemetery in Nogales, Arizona - married
August 17, 1916 in EI Paso, Texas to David John Cumming, b August 8, 1889 in
Arizona, d December 23, 1965 and buried in Nogales, Arizona - a son of Douglas
Wallace Cumming of Ontario, Canada, and his second wife, a daughter of Thomas
McFaden - one of Nogales' earliest residents. John Cumming established a ranch
in Arizona, and was a member of the School Board who interviewed Inez when she
applied for a teaching position. They met, and were married - rearing their
three children in Arizona.
Armid Moray Hancock, b December 5, 1896 at Stranger, d December 21, 1896
and buried in Stranger Cemetery, Falls County, Texas.
Cornick Kendal Hancock, b January 18,1898 at Stranger, d June 18, 1899
and buried in Stranger Cemetery, Falls County, Texas.
Sanford Stallworth Hancock, b January 21, 1900 at Stranger -lives in
Hamilton, Texas - married December 26, 1923 at Stranger, Falls County, Texas to
Florence Werle in, b October 18, 1897 in Florida, d 1985 in Hamilton, Texas and
buried in Stranger Cemetery.
Loraine Eugenia Hancock, b March 24, 1902 at Stranger, Falls County,
Texas - married in 1925 to Jesse Monroe ("Jack") Brothers, b March 10, 1903, d
September 30, 1960 and buried in Stranger Cemetery
- a son of Jesse Barzilla and Laura (Hufstetler) Brothers.
Earl Conrad Hancock, b March 29, 1904 at Stranger, Falls County, Texas -
married Alta Lela Yates (called "Daughty").
Gertrude was often called out to help relatives and other friends (after
the Stranger Community lost all its physicians) to help in time of illness, and
during childbirth. She was a member in the Stranger Cemetery Association, which
was established in 1938 by the women of the community, to raise funds for the
maintenance of the cemetery. Holman and Gertrude's youngest son, Earl, and his
wife continue to reside in Falls County.
