GLEN GRUSENDORF

 

 

     Glen Grusendorf, b November 2, 1913 near Riesel, Texas - was a son of Paul Grusendorf, b 1885, and his wife, Hattie (Potter) Grusendorf, b January 30, 1886. Glen was reared on his father's farm, where they raised cotton and corn, and also ran a gin. Glen was the owner of an automobile body shop, and sold cars. He worked as a surveyor for the Soil Conservation Department, and as a construction supervisor on a Brazos River Project. For a while, he was a policeman for the City of Marlin.

     In June 1939, Glen Grusendorf was married to Opal Bates, b August 8, 1916 - a daughter of John James Bates, b July 25, 1887, d April 11, 1961, and his wife, Emily (Herring) Bates, b December 29, 1889, d June 11, 1959 - a daughter of James Wesley and Elizabeth Cordelia (Pierce) Herring. The Herrings were natives of Tennessee before they moved to Anderson County, Texas. After James Wesley Herring died in 1904, Elizabeth (Pierce) Herring moved to the Gardner Plantation in Limestone County, where her children worked.

     John James Bates was a County Superintendent for Limestone County Schools, an Elder in the Church of Christ, and the author of a book, "Remembering."

     Opal (Bates) Grusendorf was a graduate of Sam Houston University, and one of her assignments was "Relief Matron" at the Woman's Prison. She taught fifth grade at Marlin Elementary School until her pro- motion to administer tests to the Marlin Independent School District students.

     Glen and Opal (Bates) Grusendorf had two children:

     Glenda Gay Grusendorf; and John Paul Grusendorf, b December 31, 1948 at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco, Texas.

     John Paul Grusendorf grew up in Marlin, and obtained his college degree in Vocational Industrial Arts. He is a teacher in Marlin Junior High School. On January 23, 1970 at Trinity Lutheran Church near Riesel, John Paul was married to Doris Lee Locke, b Novem- ber 1, 1950 - a daughter of Leo and Pauline (Pick) Locke. Doris is a graduate of Sam Houston University. John Paul and Doris have two children: Sandra Grusendorf, b February 12, 1971 in Huntsville - is very active in 4-H Interscholastic League Ready Writing and Poetry; is "Layout Editor" on the school newspaper; and likes baseball, basketball, and swimming. The second child is John Paul Grusendorf, Jr., b May 12, 1973 - who is an honor student, a U. Interscholastic League participant, and a member of the 4-H Club.
