JOHN CAMPBELL GREEN
John Campbell Green, b December 3, 1888 in Huntsville, Alabama, d
February 16, 1982 in Rosebud, Falls County, Texas and buried there in Woodland
Cemetery - was one of fourteen children of Charles Green and his second wife,
Mary Elizabeth (Pike) Green, a native of Georgia. Charles Green owned the
property that included Green Mountain, Alabama, and there is an historical
marker on that site.
John Campbell Green immigrated to Rosebud, Texas in 1907, where he met
and married ca 1915 to Pearl Trammel, b July 16, 1899 near Caldwell, Texas, d
October 16, 1984 in Rosebud - a daughter of Dennis and Mary Jane Trammell, who
had settled near Pleasant Grove, Falls County, Texas, when she was a child.
Pearl worked as a milliner for the White Mercantile Store.
On October 29, 1908, John opened the first Green Mercantile, Grocery, and
Hardware Store in Rosebud, which subsequently became "Green Brothers" when he
was joined in the business by his three brothers, Ernest E., H. L., and A. N.
Green. H. L. and A. N. Green later moved to Cameron to establish their own
business; and the Rosebud store was operated by John and Ernest Green.
John Campbell and Pearl (Trammel) Green made Rosebud their until
their deaths at the ages of 94 and 83 years, respectively; and their children
continue in business in that community - operating the Green Grocery, Green
Flower Shop, and Green Funeral Home.
They were members of the First Methodist Church of Rosebud, and John was
Chairman of the Board when the new brick building was constructed in 1949. He
was a member of the Board of Directors of the Rosebud Independent School
District, and a director of the Rosebud State Bank which failed in 1928. He
worked for the progress of his community all his life.
John Campbell and Pearl (Trammel) Green were the parents of three
children: John Campbell Green, Jr., b December 1, 1915- married Mary Virginia
Kauk. He owns the Green Grocery Store. They have no children.
Mary Green, b November 15, 1919 - married Allan Roberts, of Houston,
Texas. They now reside in Fort Worth, Texas.
Oscar Marshall Green, b January 2,1924 - married Mrs. Ora Adeline (Fikes)
Abbott, b November 24, 1918. She had two sons by her former marriage: Paul
Abbott, who owns the "Clifton By-the-Sea" Restaurant m Galveston Bay; and David
Abbott, who lives in Sebring, Florida. "Marshall" and "Adeline" Green had one
son: James Michael Green, b February 22,1951, who graduated in 1969 in the last
class of the old Rosebud High School. "Michael: works for the Texas Parks and
Wild Life in the security department, and lives in Houston, Texas.
Marshall and Adeline Green own the Green Flower Shop and the Green
Funeral Home, which recently became Green-Gemgross.
