LEVI WOLCOTT GOODRICH, II
Levi Wolcott Goodrich, b January 15, 1888 in Waco, McLennan County,
Texas, d January 1942- was the ninth child of Judge Levi Wolcott and Alice
(Battle) Goodrich. The family resettled in Marlin, Falls County, Texas in 1895 -
building a new near the turn-of-the-century mansion, "Highlands Mansion"
northeast of Marlin. The Goodrich was called "La Serda," after the famous
Mexican land grant on which the was built.
Levi attended school in
Marlin during his early school years, and later attended St. Edwards University
in Austin and Texas A&M University in College Station. One of his first
engineering positions was the building of the first railroad along the Mexican
coast.
On January 16, 1922, Levi Wolcott Goodrich, II married Byrd Wright - the
daughter of Augustus Robert and Mary (Downes) Wright of Gonzales, Texas, who
settled in Marlin, Texas in 1905, where Mr. A. R. ("Bob") Wright was
instrumental in the development of the water and sewerage system in Marlin.
In 1922, Levi Goodrich became superintendent of the water-works and was
city engineer of Marlin- spending twenty-nine years in that position during a
period of city development. He was devoted to his community, and was
respected throughout the state as a faithful and efficient administrator. When
he died, the flag at the City Hall was placed at half mast, and the businesses
and court house offices were closed during his funeral services. Levi and Byrd
Goodrich built their on Easy Street - enjoying the comments of their
friends about being the "good-richs" on "Easy Street." Mrs. Goodrich continues
to reside in their home.
