JAMES EDWARD GLOVER, III

 

 

     James Edward Glover, III, b December 15, 1921 in Amarillo, Potter County, Texas - was a son of James Edward and Hazel (Ward) Glover. James Edward, III was called "Jim" by family and friends.

     Jim lived in a number of southern states, and entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in January 1943. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in September 1943, and served as a Navigator on active duty until discharged as a Captain in December 1945. During World War II, he flew twenty-seven missions over enemy held territory in the European Theater of Operations, after gaining combat experience, he flew four Group Leads and three Wing Leads over Germany, as a member of the Eighth Air Force, and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Air Medal with Clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the ETO Medal with Battle Stars.

     On December 28, 1946 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas, Jim was married to Mildred Katharine Bowdon, b November 16, 1923 in Marlin - a daughter of William Smith and Mildred Katharine (Peterson) Bowdon. They reared three daughters.

     Jim received his degree as a geologist from Texas A&M University at College Station, and has practiced his profession for over thirty years. His work required that he travel extensively, and he has been in many foreign countries during the years.

The daughters of Jim and Katharine (Bowdon) Glover are:

     Mildred Lucinda Glover, b 1949 - received her Law degree from The University of Texas Law School, Austin. She is married to Anders Ljungqvist, Ph.D. - a chemist, and native of Stockholm, Sweden, and they have a daughter, Jenny Kristina Ljungqvist. Lucy is a practicing attorney, and Anders is active in his profession in Austin, Texas, where they reside.

     Katharine Peterson Glover (called "Kathy"), b 1954 - received her degree in Interior Designing from North Texas University in Denton. She married Clark Blakeman Stowe, III, and they have two sons: Clark Blakeman Stowe, IV, and William James Stowe. Kathy and "Blake" reside in Tyler, Texas, where she is engaged in interior designing, and is a homemaker; and Clark is a certified public accountant.

     Grace Peterson Glover, b 1956 - received her degree in Commercial Art and Designing from Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas. She has not married. Grace has established her own business enterprise, Grace Glover Designs, in Dallas, Texas, where she resides.

     Jim and Katharine Glover are members of the Presbyterian faith, and have resided in Dallas, Texas for many years, where his work is home-based. They also continue to own Katharine's family in Marlin, and plan to retire there. Their farm is located in West Falls County, and Jim has erected a one-room cabin on the land. They participate in the affairs of Dallas, but also are active in the social, cultural, and civic affairs of Marlin and Falls County. Katharine served on the Falls County Historical Commission for a number of years, and she did her college work at Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, after graduating from Marlin High School. She is a descendant of many of the pioneer families of Falls County- including the Thomas Jones Read family, the Albert Ware Foster family, and the Israel Lilbourne Peterson family. Her earliest ancestors in Texas were the Read family, who came in 1830 with Austin's third colony, and subsequently settled in Falls County in 1866.
