Robert C. Forbes, M.D., b. November 5, 1806 in Kentucky, d. April 24, 1871 in
Falls County, Texas and buried in an unmarked grave on Upper Blue Ridge-three
miles east of present-day Stranger Community-was a son of John Forbes, b. ca
1775 in Virginia and his wife, Elizabeth (Hawthorne) Forbes, b. 1777 in South
Carolina. John and Elizabeth (Hawthorne) Forbes moved to Kentucky by 1797, and
thence to Giles County, Tennessee, where in 1832, Robert C. Forbes married
Elzira Long, b. February 6, 1806 in Kentucky, d. June 30, 1892 at Stranger,
Falls County, Texas and buried in the Stranger Cemetery-a daughter of Benjamin
Long, b. 1775, d. after 1850 in Giles County, Tennessee, and his wife, Nancy
(Menefee) Long, b. 1778 in Kentucky, d. after 1860 in Falls County, Texas.
Benjamin and Nancy were married on December 19, 1792 in Lincoln County,
Kentucky; and Nancy (Menefee) Long was a daughter of William Menefee who married
Elizabeth Vardeman in 1776 in Virginia. Elzira (Long) Forbes was a niece of
Dorcan Vardeman (Menefee) Barclay (wife of David Barclay), who settled in the
Upper Blue Ridge area (present-day Stranger) prior to 1842.
Dr. Robert C. Forbes brought his family to Texas in 1850, where he purchased his
first land from his wife's uncle, David Barclay, and later purchased several
hundred acres in the Big Creek bottom in East Falls County.
After 1850, Dr. Forbes' two brothers, Reverend John R. Forbes, b. ca 1798 in
Kentucky-a Cumberland Presbyterian minister; and James H. Forbes, b. 1804 in
Kentucky, brought their families and their mother Elizabeth (Hawthorne) Forbes,
to the Old Blue Ridge Community (present-day Stranger) in Falls County, Texas,
where the mother died after 1860 and was buried in the family cemetery with her
son, Dr. Robert C. Forbes, and some of the Long family members.
Dr. Robert C. and Elzira (Long) Forbes reared two children:
Lycurgus Dudley Forbes, M.D., b. January 15, 1835 in Giles County, Tennessee, d.
April 27, 1892 and buried in Stranger Cemetery, Falls County, Texas-married Mrs.
Sarah ("Sallie" Scogin) Hollingsworth, and had issue.
Nancy Exar Forbes, b. 1837 in Giles County, Tennessee, d. December 23, 1890 in
Freestone County, Texas-married William Peck, who d. February 17, 1892, and had
four children: William M. Peck, Jr.; Felicia Peck who married Judge Rufus Hardy;
Electra V. Peck who married Madison H. Haythe; and Robert F. Peck who d. May 31,
1910 and never married.
Dr. Robert C. and Elzira (Long) Forbes have three great granddaughters who still
own some of the Forbes property at Stranger, and one of these continues to
reside in the family where she was born and reared.
