ROBERT R. ERSKINE
Picture of Robert R. and Tennie (Hammond) Erskine and Family
Robert R. Erskine, b August 25, 1872 at Odds in Falls County, Texas, d March 4,
1951 in Marlin - was a son of John Wilford Erskine and his first wife, Nancy
("Nannie" Griffith) Erskine, who were married in Falls County, Texas on October
13, 1869 by Reverend Z. N. Morrell. The Erskine family came to Falls County from
South Carolina, arriving in December in 1853.
Robert bought his first farm in 1901, later adding to it. On December 21, 1922,
he married Mary Tennie Hammond, b October 7, 1893 in Arkansas, d September 2,
1979 in Marlin - a daughter of James F. and Martha (Reaves) Hammond who also
were the parents of Lena Hammond who married Lloyd Coleman and Alta Hammond who
married Ithel Owen.
Tennie came to Texas by train in 1904, later teaching school at Prairie Point,
Frost Creek, and Pleasant Grove in Limestone County, Texas.
Robert (called "Rob") Erskine was a trustee of the Locust Grove School and a
Steward in the Odds Methodist Church, while Tennie was active in both church and
school affairs. Later, they moved to Marlin to send their youngest daughter to
school, since the school bus to Groesbeck was discontinued during World War II.
The eldest daughter graduated at Groesbeck High School in 1941.
Tennie worked as a practical nurse in Marlin, and was among the first Licensed
Vocational Nurses in Marlin.
Robert R. and Mary Tennie (Hammond) Erskine had two daughters:
Tennie Lou Erskine, b January 10, 1925 - married November 7, 1942 to Barney R.
Henley, who died December 8, 1978 - a son of Albert Lee and Annie (Arney)
Henley. They had five children: Kathleen Henley, Barbara Kay Henley, Robert Lee
Henley, Barney R. Henley, Jr., and Joseph David Henley (deceased). There are
five grandchildren: Sandi Sue Steele, Jamie Lynn Hayslip, Jacob Heath Henley,
Brooke Elizabeth Henley, and Robert Lee Henley, Jr. After the death of her
husband, Tennie Lou (Erskine)
Thomas Jasper Erskine - son of William R. and Mary Elizabeth (Garrett) Erskine
Henley married second on May 12, 1981 to Carl Frank Webster - a son of Lacy and
Julia (Stanford) Webster.
Bobbie Jean Erskine, b April 16, 1929 - married July 16, 1950 to Clint E.
Muhlinghause - son of Clinton and Odell (Stegall) Muhlinghause. Bobbie was a
1946 graduate of Marlin High School. Clint and Bobbie have two children:
Melanie Muhlinghause, who married Thomas Lockwood and has Thomas Jason Lockwood
and Barrett Austin Lockwood, and Wayne Lee Muhlinghause. Bobbie and Tennie Lou
have very fond memories of visiting their elderly grandmother who became blind,
and she would feel her grandchildren to "see" how much they were growing. One
winter they made ice cream during their visit to her, using ice from the trees.
Both Bobbie and Tennie Lou and their husbands built their homes on their
father's farm, and their mother's favorite recreation after she retired was
fishing at the farm, where cattle graze in the fields that once grew cotton and
corn.
