WILLIAM HENRY DUTY

 

 

 

     William Henry Duty, b April 12, 1801 in Sumner County, Tennessee, d June 30,1876 - a son of George Duty, b ca 1775 in North Carolina, d ca 1821 in Tennessee, and Elizabeth (Thomas) Duty, b in North Carolina. George and Elizabeth (Thomas) Duty were married September 28, 1798.

     William Henry (called "Henry") Duty married first ca 1825 in Sumner County, Tennessee to Elizabeth ("Ibbey") Berry, b ca 1808 in Tennessee, d ca 1837 at Holly Springs, Arkansas. Henry and Ibbey had four children - all born in Arkansas. After her death, Henry married second in Arkansas to Nancy Ann Jones, b January 16, 1814 in Kentucky - a daughter of John Jones of Kentucky. Henry and Nancy Ann had three children born in Arkansas before moving to Hopkins County, Texas in 1846, and they had five more children born in Texas - the last four in Falls County, where, by 1850, Henry had bought land in the present-day Satin area.

     Henry's children, by his first marriage were:

     James Madison Duty, b ca 1826, married Martha Ann (maiden name unknown), and had three children by 1860: Susan, James, and John. James Madison Duty was a veteran of the Confederate States Army. No further information.

     George Franklin Duty, b ca 1833, d in Falls County, Texas.

     Elizabeth Jane Duty, b ca 1835, married ca 1851 to John M. Barton, b ca 1818 in Tennessee, d ca 1867 in Falls County, Texas - a son of Robert and Mary (Bankhead) Barton, both deceased before 1850, but Robert being listed on the 1846 Tax List of Limestone County, Texas. Elizabeth and John had three sons: Robert Barton, b 1851, Henry F. Barton, b 1853, and George Barton, b 1858. Elizabeth (Duty) Barton died about the time George was born, and her sons Robert and George both died as teenagers. Henry F. Barton was reared by Isaac M., and then by his uncle, David G. Barton, and later married Easter Ann Mires. John M. Barton served as a sheriff of Falls County, and was in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War.

     John Henry Duty, b ca 1837 - no further information.

     By his second marriage, Henry's children were:

     Thomas J. Duty, b 1838 in Arkansas - no further information.

     Pendleton Jones Duty, b 1840, married Mary ("Mollie") Salmon on January 25, 1865 in Falls County, Texas - a daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Salmon. Pendleton served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War.

     Mary Jane Duty, b ca 1842 in Arkansas, married in Falls County, Texas on January 17,1859 to James O. Whatley, b ca 1837 in Georgia-a son of Wilson and Mary Whatley of Georgia, who also relocated in Falls County, Texas. James O. and Mary Jane (Duty) Whatley had four children: Oregona, Henry, Sarah, James, Thomas Oscar, and others.

     Robert Barton Duty, b July 11, 1846 in Hopkins County, Texas, married first on October 5, 1865 in Falls County to Harriett Wozencrft, b February 2, 1845 in Arkansas; married second in 1879 to Mary Ann ("Mollie") Summers, b April 12, 1853 in Mississippi.

     Richard Philip Duty, b August 21, 1849 in Falls County, Texas, d February 11, 1897, married Julia Harwell.

     Alfred Berry Duty, b 1853 in Falls County, Texas, married Angie Brown.

     William Duty, b February 27, 1856 in Falls County, Texas, d before 1892.

     Rice Duty, born 1860 in Falls County, No further information.

     William Henry Duty, pioneer farmer and rancher in the Brazos River bottoms of the Golinda - Satin area of Falls County, is buried at the Harris Cemetery at Rosenthal, Texas. His second wife, Nancy Ann (Jones) Duty died April 28, 1900.
