JUDGE TERRY CHARLES DICKENS

 

 

     Terry Charles Dickens, b September 23, 1896 in Fort Deposit, Alabama, d February 20, 1965 and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin-was a son of C. N. and Salome (Barganier) Dickens, who came to Falls County, Texas in 1911, and both buried in Blue Ridge cemetery in East Falls County. They initially settled n the Lott area of Falls County, and subsequently settled in the Blue Ridge area. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Salome (Barganier) Dickens moved to the Reagan Community. She died in the of a daughter in Cameron, Texas, and had been a life - long member of the Baptist Church.

     Terry Charles Dickens graduated from Reagan High School, and in 1924 he graduated from the Law School of The University of Texas at Austin. In 1926, he was elected District Attorney for Falls County; and in 1934, was elected Judge of the 82nd District Court, serving in that post until 1946, when he again practiced law until his death.

     On April 2, 1927, Terry Charles Dickens was married to Susan Hamilton, b February 13, 1903 in Rosebud, Falls County, Texas, d December 8, 1984 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas and buried in Calvary Cemetery - a daughter of John William and Lila (Powers) Hamilton. The couple had two sons:

     Terry Charles Dickens, Jr., and John Powers Dickens, who both died before their mother did.

     Judge Dickens was a veteran of World War I, and during World War II he served on the Selective Service Board. From 1952 to 1961, he served as Mayor of Mar- tin. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Marlin, and a member of Marlin Lodge No. 152, A.F.&A.M.; and also served in many other fields of civic and religious endeavors.

     After his death, Mrs. Dickens was married second in 1968 to Carroll M. Pearce, who died May 14, 1975, who had two daughters by his first marriage to Bernice Barton: Jeannine Pearce, who married a Mr. Neinast; and Estelle Pearce, who married a Mr. Ford.

     When Mrs. Susan (Hamilton) Dickens Pearce died, she was survived by two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Dickens of Duncanville, Texas; and Mrs. Dorothy Dickens, of Richardson, Texas; her two step - daughters; and four grandchildren, Grady Dickens, Robert Dickens, Drew Dickens, and Amy Dickens. She had been a life - long member of the Methodist Church, and was active in many of the church's organizations.
