HERSCHEL CHRISTIAN CONNALLY

     Herschel Christian Connally, b November 6, 1855 near Spring Place, Murray County, Georgia, d April 3, 1930 and buried in Naler Cemetery in McLennan County, Texas - was a son of Dixon Naylor Connally, b June 7, 1830 in Georgia, d April 18, 1898 at Moody and buried in Moody Cemetery, and his wife, Elender Louisa (Christian) Connally, b March 20, 1836 in Georgia, d March 11, 1898 and buried in Moody Cemetery. Dixon Naylor Connally was a brother of Jones Connally, who married Mary Ellen Terry, and they were the parents of Senator Tom Connally, of Marlin. Dixon and Elender Connally brought their family to Texas in 1870 - settling in a community then called "Perry," and now present - day Moody, McLennan County, Texas. They helped organize the Methodist Church in that community. Six of their sons, including Herschel Christian Connally, served during the Civil War in the Confederate States Army.

     In 1884, Herschel Christian Connally returned to Georgia where, on October 22, 1884, he was married first to Marietta Eudora Connally (called "Dora"), b November 26, 1862 in Walker County, Georgia, d August 10, 1887 in McLennan County, Texas and buried in Naler Cemetery - a daughter of William Lindsay and Mary Elizabeth (Connally) Connally. Herschel and Dora had two sons.

     Paul Jones Connally, b August 15, 1885 in Moody, Texas, d May 23, 1950 - married July 14, 1909 to Mary Elma Pearce, b July 24, 1889 in Rosebud, Falls County, Texas, d February 7, 1973. They had one son: Milton Pearce Connally. They lived in Waco, Lubbock, Cisco, and Austin, Texas, where Paul was with the Texas Railroad Commission.

     Dixon Lindsay Connally, b December 17, 1886 in Moody, d December 19, 1957 - married September 9, 1913 to Sammye Slade, of Rosebud, Texas. They had three sons: Dixon Lindsay Connally, Jr.; Sam Slade Connally; and Charles Price Connally. They lived several years in Rosebud, and then moved to Brownwood, Texas, where Dixon (called "Dick") had a furniture and undertaking establishment.

     On April 18, 1894 in McLennan County, Texas, Herschel Christian Connally was married second to Delia Idella McClain, b February 22, 1870 in Adair County, Kentucky, d July 26,1933 - a daughter of Joseph W. McClain, b January 8, 1841 in Kentucky, d August 3, 1906 at Moody, Texas and buried in Moody Cemetery, and his wife, Nancy Jane ("Nanie" Wheat) McClain, b July 23, 1843 in Kentucky, d January 1, 1917 and buried in Moody Cemetery. The McClains also came to Texas in 1870, and settled in present - day Moody, where they also helped to organize the Methodist Church.

     Herschel and Delia had five children born to them while residing in Moody, where he farmed and later opened the "Connally Addition" in that town. In the Fall of 1907, they moved with his two sons by his first wife, and their five children who were born in Moody, Rosebud, Falls County, Texas, where another son was born. The six children of Herschel and Delia were:

     Mary Lou Connally, b May 6, 1896, d October 31, 1924 at San Angelo, Texas - married May 1, 1921 to Carson C. Miles, of San Antonio, Texas. They had a daughter, Marjorie Miles, who married Erwin Scoggin. Carson and Mary Lou lived in San Angelo, where he was a prominent dry goods merchant and rancher.

     Grace Connally, b October 2, 1898, d July 28, 1982 and buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Dallas - married September 19, 1920 to James Fleming Carter, Jr., b July 21, 1895, d July 13, 1950 and buried in Tulsa, Oklahoma - a son of Reverend James Fleming Carter, Sr., b September 6,1855 in Dalton County, Georgia, d April10, 1943, who had been a District Attorney of Clay County, Texas before becoming a Methodist minister in the East Texas Conference, serving Rosebud Methodist Church 1908 -1912, and his wife, Margaret

Elizabeth (McCamant) Carter, b July 4, 1867 in McKinney, Texas, d October 17, 1952 - and both buried in Rosehill Cemetery in Tulsa, Oklahoma. James Fleming Carter, Jr. (called "Fleming") and Grace were the parents of three daughters: Delia Elizabeth Carter, who married Dr. Andy James Bowden; Shirley Carter, who married A. R. Schell, III and resides in PIano, Texas; and Mary Grace Carter, who married Leslie Spellman Klein. Fleming and Grace lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was Vice President of Gulf Publishing Company of Houston.

     Joseph McClain Connally, b January 26, 1901, d December 4, 1974 in Dallas - married December 27, 1931 to Helen Titterington, b September 3, 1901, of Dallas. Joe became a prominent Methodist Minister, and they lived in various Texas towns and cities - their last charge being in Dallas, Texas, where he was District Superintendent as well as Pastor of a large congregation. Joe and Helen had four children: Miriam Elaine Connally, who married James Rollins; Joseph McClain Connally, Jr.; Carolyn Frances Connally, who married a Mr. Hunt; and Stanley Morris Connally.

     Ruth Connally, b July 2, 1903, d December 29, 1983 - married Lloyd Webster Weeks, b November 11, 1900 in Kansas, d June 15, 1982. They lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he worked for many years for Bethlehem Steel Supply Company. They had no children.

     Herschel Christian Connally, Jr., b April 16, 1906, d March 23, 1978 in San Angelo, Texas - married September 1, 1933 to Hazel Faris, b June 10, 1910, of San Marcos, Texas. They had two sons: Herschel Joseph Connally; and David Terrence Connally. Herschel, Jr. and Hazel lived in San Angelo, Texas, where he was a bookkeeper for many years.

     Robert Allen Connally, b March 4, 1908 in Rosebud, Falls County, Texas, d June 7,1977 in EI Paso, Texas - married October 29, 1928 to Lola Woolverton. They had three children: Joann Connally, who married Harold Goodling; Robert Allen Connally, Jr.; and Mary Lou Connally, who has not married.

     Herschel Christian Connally was a prosperous farmer, and was Postmaster in Rosebud for several years. He and Delia were faithful members of the Rosebud Methodist Church while they resided in Rosebud; and their service and loyalty to that church were commemorated by their children, who gave the beautiful front window in the new church building, in their memorv.
