BASTROP ADVERTISER Newspaper Abstracts 03 January 1874 - 19 December 1874 The first newspaper published in Bastrop
County, TX was the Colorado Reveille.
This weekly paper’s first publication was dated 29
November 1851 but ceased publication only three or four months later.
In December 1852, William J. CAIN of Aberdeen, MS, acquired The
Reveille press and equipment to inaugurate The Bastrop
Advertiser. The Advertiser’s first
issue was dated 01 March 1853.
The Bastrop Advertiser, published weekly in Bastrop, Bastrop Co.,
Texas, is recognized as the oldest weekly newspaper in
the State of Texas. This database has been abstracted from all
surviving issues of the Bastrop Advertiser newspaper between and including the publication dates of
27 May 1854 through 26 February 1881.
Please keep in mind that many issues simply do not
exist within this time frame. In a few
cases, only one single issue survives for the entire

years a resident of BC. Remains sent
to Houston from
Bordenville, Colorado County, escorted by son H. Lee BORDEN. Probably will be buried
in Harlem, NY. DIED -- Lt. Charles L. HUDSON of the 4th
Cavalry, on Sunday 5th inst., accidental discharge of
his rifle. His remains brought to San
Antonio. Service tomorrow at the M. E. Church, Rev.
ALLEN officiating. DIED -- Mrs. George EBLIN, at her husband's
residence on Alum Creek last week. She
was the sister
of Robert H. GUILLIAMS. DIED -- Mrs. Anna Mary SCHNEIDER, wife of Mr.

disease of the heart last Monday.

MORRIS and
Louis DABNEY rushed to the scene. A
stranger in the community from Corsicana named
JOHNSON took possession of a house, was shot by the posse, and taken to
Bastrop for
medical treatment by Dr. W. B. DARDEN.
JOHNSON has a wife and a five month old
child. Yesterday two strange white men, Tom HARRIS
and Frank FRANKS, claiming to have families in
Goliad County, came to Bastrop. Had
with them a negro named Henry. They
sold a horse
to Mr. Jas. GLASS. The two got drunk
then at the river drew pistols on Bill WILLIAMS,
Aleck WHITE - colored, and Jas. GLASS.
They shot a negro, name unknown. A negro posse pursued the three, captured
them, and brought them to Bastrop. The
negro Henry is badly wounded. DIED -- J. Hunter BELL was killed at McDade
late yesterday evening by young John LAWRENCE. MARRIED -- In Houston on Tuesday morning, 20th
inst., by Rev. Mr. ZEELY, the Hon. W. B. SAYERS
of Gonzales and Miss Adele LOCKHART. 31 January 1874 C. O. THINEBER, administrator of estate of
Peter M. FOGRELL, dec'd. DIED -- Mrs. SCAGGS was horribly burned to
death near Webberville last week when her clothes caught
fire. Leaves a husband and a five week
old infant. The jury summoned by B. LYMAN, Mayor of
McDade, finds that J. Hunter BELL came to his death
by pistol shots at the hand of Jno. LAWRENCE, 23 Jan 1874. LAWRENCE was arrested
and turned over to Town Marshall NASH, but in the night LAWRENCE escaped. Jury

daughter of Eli MERCER of Amite County, Mississippi and moved to Texas in
1830. DIED -- At his residence in this county on
23rd ult. James C. WOOD, an old citizen of Texas and a
resident of BC for over 25 years. DIED -- On Monday 21st ult. Wm. SIMMONS, aged
84 years, an old Texas and long-time resident
of this county. Rev. J. W. PHILLIPS has resumed his second
Sunday appointments and will preach next Sunday, Feb.
8th. 14 February 1874 Funny article on the history of Bastrop in
which Phil. CLAIBORNE and Col. Jones RIVERS figure

- Treasurer; J. BAER - Sec'y. 21 February 1874 JOHNSON who was shot at Red Rock while
resisting arrest is now out of danger and has been moved
to the county jail. The case of State
vs. JOHNSON was continued by Esq. YOUNG. Charles WERTZNER President, Board of School
Directors, published a scholastic census of BC's nine
school districts. Bastrop Debating Society officers elected on
6th inst. Meeting on 13th: "Was
the Anglo Saxon race
justifiable in dispossessing the Indians of this Continent?" Affirmative: GREEN and MOORE. Negative: Dr. EARLY, ORGAIN, RUSSELL,
MACKENNA. Negative prevailed. Meeting on the 20th: "That a Monarchal
is a better form of government than a
Republic." To argue the

on the evening of 13th December last, of congestion
of the brain, Mrs. Bettie Alice JEFFRESS, wife of Robt. A. JEFFRESS, late of
Virginia, and daughter of Hon. John J. MONCURE. Born 30 Oct 1856 and married to

Jackson County, Arkansas, died 23 Jan 1874 in McDade,
age 27. Son of Duran[?] H. and Mary
Ann BELL. His father emigrated to Texas
and settled in BC in 185? [last digit obliterated], and died the same year at
his residence,
leaving a wife, one daughter, and five sons.
J. Hunter was the eldest. 28 February 1874 Long letter to the Editor from Phil CLAIBORNE. Thanks of the community are due to Dr. DARDEN
and Capt. FINNEY for their endeavors to improve
the appearance of the Court House grounds. The charges against JOHNSON who was shot near
Walnut Creek have been dismissed, but Comanche
County has a warrant for his arrest on a charge of murder. The following were fined $10 for gambling: G.
W. LOCKHARD, A. McDONALD, Jimy WATSON,
Jim JOHNSON, Cassius BURNS, Willis HICKERSON, and Sandy GREEN. G.
W. LOCKHARD was also bound over for the sum of $250 for exhibiting monte. Two colored men, Tom WILLIAMS and Johnson
POWELL, fought in the street on Monday with brickbats
and knives. No charges filed. 07 March 1874 Speech given by W. B. SAYERS on the

residence, 6 miles north of Bastrop, Tuesday morning last,
17 inst., of pneumonia, age about 50.
A native of Tennessee, had been a resident of BC
for over 20 years. He leaves a wife, 3
sons, and 4 daughters. Buried

Indianola on the 11th inst. and shot and killed two men,
SUTTON and SLAUGHTER. All three are of
DeWitt County. Our citizens have not
forgotten the killing of TAYLOR by SUTTON and squad in front of CROW & JONES
store in Bastrop in 1869. SUTTON
claimed to be a cousin of TAYLOR's.
They captured
a man named SHARP at the time TAYLOR was killed, who was hung or shot by
the SUTTON squad near Lockhart, TX. Mr. WATTERSON of Walnut Creek area gives a
report of the "Farmer's Co-operative Club" in that
neighborhood. On Monday last, Henry FAWSETT, a colored
blacksmith in the employ of Mr. A. ERHARD, broke
his leg while shoeing a horse. He is
under the treatment of Drs. SAYERS and LUCKETT. John HEARN, administrator debonis non of the
estate of Samuel PORTER, dec'd, has filed his account
current. 28 March 1874 In the notice of the death of FITZPATRICK
published last week, we should have given his initials as
N. E., not James. J. R. NICHOLS presented us with a 10 lb. beet
last week. A poem by Mrs. Sallie E. BALLARD MAYNARD was
published in this issue. "Sally Price," the race mare of Col.
Marsh W. TRIGG's, left this week for the Austin race course. The widow McCARTHY, occupying the SCHWARTZ
house, was robbed of everything on Tuesday
night last. This is a severe loss to

E. A. LEAK, robbed and shot
him, and raped his wife. Mr. LEAK
expected to die. Several negroes
jailed but a mob
of white men on 31 March broke open the jail and hung two, named BROWN and HIGGINS,
about one quarter mile from town. Four
more may have been hung later. For Sale - my house and lot, store house,

able to secure a new trial. DIED -- Mr. BLALOCK was killed near Red Rock
on Sat. night by Mr. ROBERSON, acting deputy
under Officer SMITHSON. ROBERSON had
arrested BLALOCK under papers from
Comanche County when BLALOCK tried to grab ROBERSON's gun. ROBERSON shot

years. 11 April 1874 Stage robbery between San Antonio and
Austin. Three men stopped the stage
and robbed passengers
Messrs. McLEMORE, O'NEAL, WATERS, BRACKERIDGE, FRAZIER, McDONALD,
WELLS, MONROE, and Mrs. LLOYD. The
stage returned to Joseph VANCE's
for fresh horses and proceeded to Austin.
$7,000 reward for robbers' capture. Part

18 April and 25 April below.] J. JUNG, Presiding Justice BC, published an
election notice. W. A. HIGHSMITH, Jno. P. JONES, and O. H. P.
McGINNIS have been appointed Notaries Public
for BC. DIED -- A young colored boy, Pass SMITH,
accidently shot himself on Sunday last, the effects of
which he died Monday night. The notorious Nelse JOHNSON, negro desperado,
was brought to Bastrop Saturday night last and jailed. DIED -- another Pensioner Gone. Mr. Duncan CAMPBELL, who died on Wednesday
evening last,
08 Apr 1874, was a soldier in the War of 1812, was 81 years at death, and had
been a
citizen of Texas for 24 years. In 1850
he moved to Texas and located in BC.
Was probably
the oldest man in BC. Father of 14
children, most of whom are living. He
leaves an
aged wife, sixty-odd years old, numerous children, and grandchildren. Drs. SAYERS, H. P. LUCKETT, T. P. EARLY, and
D. M. REAGAN were appointed a board of
Medical Examiners by the CC. A "storm" dance was held at the
house of Mr. and Mrs. Robt. GILL. At the Bastrop Council Meeting, Board of
Aldermen, regular monthly meeting, the Street Committee
recommends the following: 1) re: the difficulty between Messrs. LINKE and KIEL,
that the street should not be run through Mr. KIEL's lot, nor should a ditch
be dug through
his land; 2) that Mr. Stephen WOEHL be permitted to dam the ravine in front
of his
house or to dig a ditch in the middle of the street; 3) Corporation of Bastrop is not the proper
tribunal to settle the problem of flooding of several homes caused by Mr. SCHAFER's
diverting water. 18 April 1874 Mr. John W. BOWEN found some mail bags on Bee
Creek in Caldwell County. These had
been stolen
off the stage in the recent robbery.

identified as three men from MO: 1) James H. REED
alias Bill JONES age 28 from Vernon Co., MO where his mother, brother, and
two sisters
live. He came to Texas in 1872,
settled in Bosque Co. then moved to Dallas Co. where
his wife lives. He seduced a girl
there named Rosa McCOMUS whom he promised to
marry. 2) Cal. H. CARTER from Bates
Co., MO, age 28. 3) NELSON alias Jack ROGERS. 4) J. M. DICKINS from Vernon Co., MO. Has a wife in San Antonio. They traded
horses with WOOLFORK in San Marcos prior to the robbery. [See also 11 April and
18 April above.] A brief obituary on Duncan CAMPBELL, which
appeared in the Mexia Ledger, was reprinted here. DIED -- Mr. MILTBACK, a commercial traveller
en route from Goliad to Beeville accompanied by
a negro driver, was ambushed by three bandits. MILTBACK shot two bandits but was himself
killed by the third. MARRIED -- In Bastrop at the residence of the
bride's father, Col. R. S. GREEN, by the Rev. Fred
L. ALLEN, Wednesday evening, 22 April 1874, Mr. Albert B. REYNOLDS and Miss
Francis M. GREEN, all of Bastrop. Master Joseph SMITH returned for a visit from
college where he is studying for the ministry. Miss Josie WILBARGER has painted a beautiful
porcelain picture. She has been taking
lessons from
Miss Lizzie TAYLOR of Excelsior College. The school children of Excelsior College had a
dance at the residence of Mr. W. C. POWELL on
the 21st. J. C. CABANISS, the railroad depot agent, and
S. W. NOBLE, the express agent, have moved from
the McDade station to the Giddings station. DIED -- On 07 April 1874 at his residence in
McDade, Dr. P. A. MIDDLETON, aged 46 years. Was
a native of Alabama and came to Texas about 1856. Practiced medicine here for nearly

Mr. DEATS was robbed, all in Austin. ACCIDENT and DEATH -- Mrs. Virginia IRVINE,
daughter of S. B. CHURCHILL, living about
6 miles north of Bastrop, on Tuesday last, visited her uncle Mr. John
EGGLESTON. On the return home, IRVINE
took with her the EGGLESTON's little girl, Zelpha Wesley [surname
possibly WESLEY?]. When several miles
from town, the horse shied, throwing both
riders. Zelpha was killed, and was
buried Wednesday evening. IRVINE may
not recover

livery stable keeper at La Grange Tuesday last. Esq. WAMEL published an agricultural report
for precinct No. 3. Killing and Hanging in McDade -- On Saturday
afternoon, five railroad workers were eating lunch when
a negro approached asking to play cards.
The negro was sent away, but not before he
threw his dirty sock in their cooking pot.
The negro returned with a gun and shot John TROY,
killing him instantly. The negro was
apprehended by H. A. HIGHSMITH and W.
A. PLUMMER and taken to the Marshall and ironed. While the Marshall was escorting
the man to the Bastrop jail, a number of unknown persons took the negro and hung
him. Wm. H. KENNEDY, telegraph operator at McDade,
published an estimate of the cost to run a telegraph
line between McDade and Bastrop. Thos. NULL, charged under indictment with
cattle stealing, was arrested by Deputy Zeno HEMPHILL
near McDade Tuesday night. NULL tried
to shoot HEMPHILL; HEMPHILL
shot back, striking NULL in the hip.
Deputy Sheriff MORRIS went to McDade
yesterday to pick up the prisoner. 16 May 1874 Steph. H. DARDEN, Comptroller in Austin, sent
a notice to John KOHLER, Sheriff BC, regarding
taxes and when each kind is due.

Hays County, died there on the morning of the 5th
inst. Mr. FRANKS was a citizen of BC
in the early days and moved to Hays County about
14 years ago. Father of Wm. L. FRANKS,
also of Mountain City. Jas. MOORE, Sec'y of the Mosquit Grange,
announces the appointment of M. S. WALLACE as
deputy for Bastrop and Fayette Counties. Deputy Sheriff Louis DABNEY with a posse
attempted to arrest Dick WILLIAMS, a negro indicted
in the DC for hog theft. WILLIAMS was
found on the H. K. McDONALD place. Gunfire was exchanged, but WILLIAMS was
eventually apprehended on Thursday morning
after having received perhaps mortal gunshot wounds. C. ERHARD sends a letter to the Editor about a
concert at the Casino, praising the music of Prof. H.
MOELER of La Grange (pianist) and Prof. Emil LINDENBERG, lately of Dresden, Germany
(violinist). Another poem by G. A. DARDEN, aged 10,
published. 23 May 1874 The residence of Bob CAMPBELL, near the
Arsenal in Austin, was robbed on Monday night. He
lost a fine gold watch. E. P. PHILLIPS of Austin was robbed of $98 and
all his clothing at his boarding house on Sunday morning. Mr. James COPE, Austin plasterer, was robbed
of $2.50 by three masked and armed men on Friday
night. Two little children of Mr. A. H. and Mrs. E.
J. GREGORY, living near Fayetteville, were bitten by
a cat, supposed to be rabid, on Tuesday, 5th inst. DIED -- Charles LAUDET was knifed by Jno.
PATTEN during a gambling dispute in the lower portion
of Caldwell County. Mr. E. FRANKE and Mr. Will. F. FARIS shot at
each other during an altercation in Lockhart last
Saturday, seriously wounding the former. Thos. NULL, shot near McDade, is progressing
favorably. DIED -- on Thursday evening, Wm. MILLET, a
little son of Mr. MILLET of the Claiborne House,
drowned in the Colorado River. The negro Dick WILLIAMS is recovering from his
wounds and has been moved to the county jail. C. L. MORGAN, assignee of John S. JOHNSON -
bankrupt, will sell to the highest bidder JOHNSON's
life insurance policy valued at $3,000(?). J. D. MORRISON will teach at the Hill's

murder and until recently housed in the Bastrop jail,
made his escape by an old trick. His
wife, sister, and another female relative came to

in Bastrop on or about 24 Oct 1870. On
02 Mar 1874 between 9 and 10 o'clock p.m.,
defendant willfully and without cause abandoned the bed and home of
petitioner and left
in the company of one Frank WARREN and has continued to abandon petitioner up to
the present time. Petitioner prays for
divorce process. Defendant summoned to
appear at
the next session of DCBC on the fourth Monday of November 1874 to answer the petition. W. C. POWELL and J. R. NICHOLS presented us
with fine messes of turnips and greens. The illness of Dr. E. STARKE has confined him
to his room for the past week. MARRIED -- on Thursday, October 22 at the

wedding Thursday night, Mr. Jones TRIGG had one of the hind wheels of his

stalks of the Louisiana Ribbon Cane, raised on

Stop the Thieves! On Monday
night 21 Nov 1874, two men named Thos. TUCKER and
Mack CARSON stole a pony and a mule with bridles and saddles from W. J. CAIN, 5
miles from McDade. TUCKER is an
Irishman, 5'9" high, red complexion, light sandy hair,
pale blue eyes, about 30 years old, heavy sandy moustache. Mack CARSON is 5'6" or
7", fair complected, thin black hair, blue eyes, about 33 years old, a
rather downcast look,
and a moustache. [The 28 Nov 1874
newspaper reports that TUCKER and CARSON had
been employed by W. J. CAIN. The
Reward was also increased to $100 in this issue. 14 November 1874 DIED -- W. J. CAIN, who first published the
Advertiser in March 1853. T. C. CAIN
purchased the
paper from his brother in 1871. Several obituaries published for William J.
CAIN who died at Bastrop on the 7th inst.

Mrs. Martha and the late Robt. HOGUE, dec'd, in Precinct
3, Lee County. She was raped and
murdered last week. The negro Dan PURYEAR
was arrested Saturday for the crime. He
was found guilty and was hung. It is
believed PURYEAR poisoned his former mistress who died some time ago. Little Jimmie GLOVER has been seriously ill
for several weeks past, but it is thought he is better. Rev. J. W. PHILLIPS will hold services in the
Episcopal Church tomorrow (Sunday) morning and night. Wm. MILLER is selling a No. 1 second hand hack
with harness. George DECHARD, our former townsman, visited

dark copper colour, 6 ft. tall, claims to
