Newspaper Abstracts

25 March 1871 - 20 December 1873

The first newspaper published in Bastrop County, TX was the Colorado Reveille.  This weekly

paper’s first publication was dated 29 November 1851 but ceased publication only three or

four months later.  In December 1852, William J. CAIN of Aberdeen, MS, acquired The Reveille

dated 01 March 1853.  The Bastrop Advertiser, published weekly in Bastrop, Bastrop Co., Texas,

is recognized as the oldest weekly newspaper in the State of Texas.

This database has been abstracted from all surviving issues of the Bastrop Advertiser newspaper

between and including the publication dates of 27 May 1854 through 26 February 1881.  Please

keep in mind that many issues simply do not exist within this time frame.  In a few cases, only

one single issue survives for the entire year.  Typos were common.

Negro-Radical Barbecue -- Sat. last.  Parade headed by two hacks, one occupied by Judge C. C.

JUNG with Judge SCHUTZE, District Attorney B. TRIGG, J. DUVE, and the colored

representative Jeremiah J. HAMILTON.  Carroll MILLER (negro) and Eddie QUICK also

        mentioned.

Letter to the Ed. from Ev BURLESON re: his name appearing in the Austin State Journal on 25

July as having been arrested by the State Police of BC.  BURLESON says he has never

been arrested by the State Police and is guilty of no misdemeanors.

[It was brought to the attention of reconstructionist Gov. Edmond DAVIS that a number of violent

acts against Blacks were being committed in Bastrop County.  The Governor threatened

imposing martial law in BC, and directed J. B. McFARLAND, Judge DCBC, to convene

a Grand Jury to ascertain if the Ku Klux Klan were committing these crimes.  Much of the

newspaper of this date and of 12 Aug concerned this issue.  Some of the articles of both

        dates are summarized below.]

        1) Letter to the Ed. re: Hon. John HANCOCK and violence surrounding the colored

schools.  Mr. HAMS [HAMA?], teacher in the colored school, mentioned.

        2) The Grand Jury, consisting of John P. JONES - Foreman, Col. John A. LAWRENCE,

        D. C. [P. C.?] HENDRICKS, C. KLEINERT, Capt. John D. NASH, Frank F. JONES,

        C. G. [C. C.?] CALDWELL, Jerry Cooksey (colored), Geo. W. EBLIN (born in BC),

Wm. A. J. JENKINS, Dan M. JACKSON, Robert P. JONES (leading member of the

Methodist Church), Robt. J. PRICE, J. NEGGERETH, and Charles CHAMBERS

(colored), reported to Judge McFARLAND that it found no evidence that the Ku Klux Klan

exists in the county.  Esq. LAWHORN mentioned.  Marion HARRISON testified before

        the Grand Jury.

[Apparently the Austin State Journal denounced the Grand Jury's decision, and Gov.

DAVIS continued to threaten martial law.  These prompted more editorials, defense of BC,

and return denouncements from the Bastrop Advertiser.  The articles are summarized

below, from the Bastrop Advertiser's point of view.]

        1) Gov. DAVIS should fear impeachment.  Eddie QUICK also mentioned.

        2) Reprint of a letter from Gov. Edmond DAVIS to Judge McFARLAND which describes

some of the crimes and asks the Judge to remind the Grand Jury to mind the law.

        Editorials opposing this letter follow.

        3) Reprint of a second letter from Gov. DAVIS to Judge McFARLAND, and more

editorializing.  Nat MOORE, Sheriff JUNG mentioned.

        4) Letter to the Ed. from A. D. McGINNIS re: the Grand Jury.  McGINNIS opposed

Grand Jury's findings.  Editor describes this letter as unbecoming.  Judge HANCOCK,

Col. Thos. H. JONES (formerly a resident of Travis County, but for some time a resident

of Salado), and R. D. KINNEY mentioned.

Morgan C. HAMILTON, at the Austin Republican Convention on the 23d ult., declared he would

not pay the enormous and illegal taxes assessed on his property.

Letter to the Ed. from W. A. HIGHSMITH detailing specific state and county tax rates.

Letter to the Ed. from W. H. CLIVE, Bastrop.  Nat MOORE captured CLIVE and labelled

CLIVE "a notorious murderer."  CLIVE reports that he was acquitted by a Grand Jury of

        all blame, and denounces MOORE.
