Will
of John S. Richardson
In the name of God Amen! I, John S. Richardson [Judge], of Claremont County Sumter District being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make and publish this my last Will and Testament, in manner following, that is to say……
First, I give to my beloved wife,
Elizabeth Lucretia Richardson, for and during the term of her natural life and
no longer my whole and entire Estate, real, personal and mixed, choices in
action & C. & C and out of my said Estate so given for life, I
authorize my said wife to sell give or dispose of forever the following
property to wit, and Ten of my Negroes, also any part of my Furniture, Horses,
Cattle, Plantation, Stock and utensils, and any debts due to me at her own will
and pleasure, but whatever part of the said specified property, she should not
so dispose of, is to remain as a part of my Estate to be divided as herein
after immediately bequeathed to wit, after the Death of my said Wife, I will
and bequeath all my said Estate to be equally divided between my three children
John S. Richardson Junr, Susan W. A. Logan and Francis Deliesselive Richardson
share and share alike to them and their respective Heirs forever, such share to
be taken by each of my said children in lieu and full satisfaction of all or
any demand or possible claim of any kind against me or my Estate. Nevertheless, the part or share which in the
aforesaid division may fall to my said Daughter Susan, is to be held and vested
in by my said sons, John and Deliesselive, in trust, for the sole and separate
use, benefit and behalf of my said Daughter Susan for and during her natural
life, and after her death, to be equally divided among her surviving children,
[share and share alike] their respective heirs and assigns forever.
Item, In dividing my Estate between
my children, I give and bequeath to my son Deliesselive the right and
permission of taking or purchasing my Plantation and lands called Blumhill on
which I now live, to him his heirs and assigns forever, at and for the price of
five thousand dollars.
Item, It is my will and desire that
my brother William G. Richardson should have the use of the dwelling and
premises now occupied by him, of as much of the land which I lately purchased
from Richard Richardson, as my said Brother may desire, during his natural life
and no longer, agreeably to a certain writing which I have given to him, and
trusting that my wife and children will befriend him as I have……
Item, I confide in my wife and
children that knowing my intention as to Maynard Richardson Bell, they will
provide him with the means of obtaining a good and practical education, and see
that he is given such profession or calling as may be suitable……
Item, I need scarcely _______ to
them Faithful Jack and the old Negroes….
Lastly, I appoint and constitute my
said Wife Executrix and my said sons, John and F. Deliesselive, Executors of
this my last Will and Testament, but if my said Wife so desires, she is to be
sole Executrix during her life.
In Witness whereof I have hereto set
my hand and Seal this Eighteenth day of February in the year of our Lord One
Thousand Eight Hundred and Forty Six….
