Will of Catharine McLeod
State
of South Carolina.
In
the name of God, Amen! I, Catherine McLeod of Sumter District in the State
Aforesaid, Widow, being by Gods blessing, of sound and disposing Mind and
Memory, do make this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all others, by
me, heretofore made.
Item
1st.
It is my will and desire, that all my just debts be paid, out of that portion
of my estate, which is not hereinafter specifically bequeathed and devised.
Item
2nd.
I give and bequeathe unto My daughter, Elexcy C. McLeod, for and during the
term of her natural life and no longer, My negro girl slave, named Diana, with
her future issue and increase, remainder to the heirs of her body who may be
living at the time of her death who shall
take the same equally, share and share alike, per Stripes and not per
Capita, and failing such issue at the time of her death, remainder to my Son
John R. McLeod, to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
Item
3rd.
I give and bequeath unto my daughter, Mary McLeod, upon the same terms
limitations and conditions, and with the same reminder, as are hereinbefore
expressed of and concerning the slave given to my daughter Elexy C. McLeod, my
Negro Slaves Susan, and her Child George, with their future issue and increase.

4th.
I give and bequeath unto my Son, John R. McLeod, to him, his heirs, Executors,
Administrators and assigns forever, my negro slaves Bob, Joe, Hampton, Gause,
Jim and Maria, with their future issue and increase-

5th.
I give and bequeath unto my Son, John R. McLeod, to him, his heirs, Executors,
administrators and assigns forever, all the rest and residue of my estate of
every nature and description, Real personal, and mixed, goods, chattels, and
choses in action; which I shall die Seised in, possessed of, or entitled to.
Item
6th.
I nominate, constitute, and appoint my Son, John R. McLeod, Sole Executor of
this, my last will and testament.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto
set my hand and Seal, this 10th day of September in the year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and fifty three, and in the Seventy‑eighth year of
the Independence of the United States of America.
