WILL OF ELIZABETH MAPLES
In the name of god, Amen, I, Elizabeth Maples, of the Sate of South Carolina, Sumter District and Clarendon County, being mindful of my mortality do this Second day of July in the Year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and twenty four make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, to wit - - - -
First, I desire to be decently buried without any funeral pomp, and with as little expense as may be necessary.
Secondly, I give and bequeath unto my grandson, William Laurence Maples, son of Willis Maples, one Negroe boy by the Name of Isaac, the child of Sall, now about thirteen years of age, to him and the lawful issue of his body forever; but should he die under age and without leaving lawful issue, then it is my will and desire that the said Negro boy Isaac shall return to, and belong to my granddaughter, Elizabeth Herriott Alice Maples, and the lawful issue of her body forever, or in lieu of said Negroe boy Isaac, I give and bequeath to my said grandson, William Laurence Maples, the sum of five hundred dollars out of my Estate with interest from the day of my death to be applied to his education at the discretion and direction of my Executors; and in case of his death under the age of twenty one years, leaving no lawful issue, then it is my will and desire that the said sum of five hundred dollars, or so much as may be left from his education, with all the interest due therein, return to, and belong to my granddaughter, Elizabeth Herriott Alice Maples, and the lawful issue of her body forever.
Thirdly, I will and bequeath unto my granddaughter, Elizabeth Herriott Alice Maples, one Negroe girl by the name of Dorcas, a child of Sall, to her and the lawful issue of her body forever, but should she die, the said Elizabeth Herriott Maples, without leaving lawful issue under the age of twenty one years, then, and in that case it is my will and desire that the said Negroe girl Dorcas and all her increase do return to, and belong to my grandson, William Laurence Maples, and his lawful issue forever, or in lieu of said Negroe girl Dorcas which I give to my granddaughter, Elizabeth Herriott Alice Maples, I give and bequeath to her the sum of five hundred dollars with interest thereon from the day of my death, and to be applied to her education at the discretion and direction of my Executors, and should she die under the age of twenty one years leaving no lawful issue, then it is my will and desire that whatever part of the said sum of five hundred dollars with the interest due thereon, which may remain from her education, do return to, and forever belong to my grandson, William Laurence Maples, and his lawful issue, but should both my grandchildren, as before named, die without leaving lawful issue, that it is my will and desire that the whole of what I here by leave and bequeath unto them do return to my son, Thomas Maples, and his lawful issue forever.
Fourthly, I leave all the rest and residue of my Estate both real and personal which I now, or hereafter may have, make or acquire in any way or manner whatever, and I also lend the whole of the property which I hold by bond and mortgage from my son, Thomas Maples, dated Fourteenth of June 1823to my son, Thomas Maples, during his natural life and at his death, I give and bequeath the whole of the same to the lawful issue of his body forever, and should he never have lawful issue, then the same to be at his disposal by will or otherways forever, embracing the whole of my Estate excepting what I have given my grandchildren.
Fifthly, I nominate and appoint my son, Thomas Maples, sole and entire Executor to this my last will and testament, in witness whereof hereunto affix my hand and seal the day and year above written
Signed, Sealed, Published and Declared by the Testator as for her last will and testament, in our presence, who, at her request, in her presence, and in the presence of each other have subscribed as witness thereto
