WILL OF BENJAMIN DUPRE HODGE

 

SUMTER DISTRICT, SOUTH CAROLINA, APRIL1ST, 1851

I, Benjamin Dupre Hodge being of sound mind desireto make the following distribution of my property. I wish mypersonal property (except my household & kitchen furniture) to beappraised & to be Equally divided between my wife Emily ElizaHodge, & my three children John William Hodge, Benjamin EvansHodge & Emma Elizabeth Hodge. The portion awarded to my daughterEmma is to be settled on her & her heirs in case of her marriage. The house hold & kitchen furniture mentioned above to be givento my wife without appraisement.Of my real Estate I give the place onwhich I reside--bounded on the North

by my own lands (otherwise bequeathed below)commencing at a corner above the school house field at a lightwoodStake, & running nearly west course avoiding the School house tothe South end of the Sweet gum plat to Mr. S. Harvins land. Southbounded in Pocotaligo Swamp by River's land, East by lands of John M.Hodge, & west by Mr. Saml Harvin's land---to my wife Emily ElizaHodge during her life--after her death to my daughter Emma ElizabethHodge & to be settled on her & her heirs in case of hermarriage all of my other lands I wish to be appraised & equallydivided between my sons John W. Hodge & Benjamin E. Hodge.--------

The Negros about the house are to be appraised& given to my wife in her portion, namely Negro woman Hannah, manCyrus, boy Chaner.

I wish my wife & my Sons John & Benjaminto be my Executors, & my wife to be guardian for my daugterEmma.
