In the name of God Amen. I JAMES T. DUKES of theState of South Carolina and District of Sumter do make and ordainthis my last will and testament in manner and form following &endash;that is to say

In the first place I appoint and set apart thattract of land near and adjoining MATTHEW JAMES land to pay my lawfuldebts and my Executors hereinafter to be appointed are directed tosell the same as soon after my decease as practable so as not tointerfere with my planting interest the present year and to apply theproceeds to that purpose; And in case there should not be asufficient amount raised by the sale of said land then and in thatcase I appoint and set apart my negroe woman SARAH and her childCHARLOTTE to be sold and all my stock (excepting such as may besituated by my wife) to pay the balance should there be any. Theexcefs should there be appropriated to the use and benefit of myfamily-------------------------------------------------

Secondly. I give and devise and bequeath unto mybeloved wife EMELINE L. DUKES all that tract of land whereon I nowreside during the term of her natural life and at her death I giveand bequeath the said Tract of land unto my son now an infant. Butin case my said son should die before he arrive at the age of twentyone leaving no wife nor child then my wife EMELINE shall take a feesimple Estate in said lands.

Thirdly. I give devise and bequeath unto wifeEMELINE L. DUKES and my infant son all the rest and residue of myEstate personal share and share alike forever. It is my will anddesire that all my estate (except as before excepted) should be kepttogether on the plantation and my Executors are hereby exprefslyrequired to do so and to employ some good and suitable white man toattend to the business of the plantation in the capacity of anoverseer------------

Lastly. I nominate constitute and appoint myworthy and trusty friends JOHN D. MCKNIGHT and ALEXANDER C. MCKNIGHTExecutors to this my last will and testament. Hereby revoking alland every will or wills heretofore made by me-----
