IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN.
I, Ripley Copeland, Sen'r. of State and Districtaforesaid, being feeble in body but of sound mind and memory, blessedbe God for same, but calling to mind the mortality of my body, andknowing it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordainthis my last Will and Testament. Principally, and first of all, Iresign my soul to God who gave it, and the worldly estate which ithas pleased him to bless me with, I bequeath in the following manner,viz.
ITEM 1st. It is my will and desire that during thelifetime of my beloved wife, Rachel Copeland, that the plantation andall things thereon, be kept together and continued as at this time,that the negroes, horses and stock of all kinds, together with allthings appertaining to the plantation, be kept together for thesupport of the family consisting of my beloved wife and daughter,Mary Copeland and my granddaughter, Dolly Copeland.
2nd. I will and bequeath to my beloved daughter,Mary Copeland, after the decease of my wife, one hundred acres of theland where I now live, the upper part of said land, whereon the housestands to her and the heirs of her body. But should she die withoutissue it is my will and desire that the said tract of land belong andturned over to my beloved son Elias Copeland.
I also will and bequeath to my daughter MaryCopeland and to my son, Elias Copeland after the decease of mybeloved wife one Negro girl named Nisa and her issue should she haveany to be equally divided between them two, viz. Mary and EliasCopeland. I also will and bequeath to my daughter Mary Copeland onenegro woman named A-Cena, but should my daughter die without issue mywill is that the said negro belong to my heirs. I will and bequeathto my son, Elias Copeland, the remaining part of the land or-tractwhereon I now live, after the decease of my wife, to him and hisheirs forever.
I will and bequeath to my beloved daughter, SarahRandolph after the decease of my wife, that tract or portion of landjoining lands of Alfred Scarborough one hundred acres more or less,known as the Kentuck tract, to her and to her heirs forever.
I will and bequeath to Jessie Scarborough fivedollars to be paid him by my executors.
It is my wi1l and desire that the remainingportion of my estate not already willed away or mentioned above, besold and equally divided between the remaining children, who I willproceed to name, but before I name my children, it is my will anddesire that Dolly Copeland, my granddaughter, receive half a portionwith those remaining heirs, the names of whom are ss follows: WilliamCopeland, Ripley Copeland, Martha Huggins, Moses Copeland, ReubenCopeland, Nanny Lewis, Rachel Baker, and the portion of my deceaseddaughter, Bessie Scarborough I will and desire to go to her childrenand her heirs forever. The above estated to be divided between thosenamed heirs consists in negroes, horses, stock of all kind, gear,carriages, household furniture, etc. except two beds and furnitureone of which I will and bequeath to my daughter Mary Copeland and theother to my granddaughter, Dolly Copeland. Any money or bonds I maydie possessed with I will and desire may be divided between my sonElias Copeland and my daughter, Sarah Randolph, should there be anyafter the payment of my Just debts. Furthermore, I do herebyconstitute and appoint William Copeland and Elias Copeland executorsof this my last Wil1 and Testament, revoking and annulling all formerwills and testaments. In testimony where of I have hereunto affixedmy hand and seal this 5th day of May in the year of our Lord onethousand, eight hundred and forty-three and in the sixty seventh yearof American Independence.

Personally appeared before me John Mathis whobeing duly sworn sayeth that he was personally present and saw RipleyCopeland sign, seal, publish and declare the within instrument ofwriting to be and contain his Last Will and Testment, that he thesaid Ripley Copeland was at the time of sound and disposing mind,memory and understanding as far as he, this deponent knows andbelieves, and that Royal Brewer and James McCallum. together withhimself, this deponent, did subscribe their names as witnessesthereto at the request of the said Ripley Copeland in his presenceand in the presence of each other.
