Know
all men by these presents, that I, Susannah Mann Brownfield of the District and
State aforesaid, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make, declare
and publish this as my last Will end Testament and hereby dispose of my property in the following manner:
In
the first place it is my Will that my just debts be fully paid.
Secondly, After the payment of debts as aforesaid, I
give and bequeath to my daughter-in‑law Pauline Brasilia Brownfield, my
Carriage and Carriage horses, and my household furniture including my Beds,
Bedding and Table linen.
Thirdly, To my Grandson Thomas Sumter Brownfield, I
give and bequeath two Slaves, Washington and Wade, the Sons of my Negro Woman
Ethelend ‑
Fourthly, To my Grand‑daughter Mary Heriot
Brownfield, I give and bequeath my Gold Watch and one Slave named Annette the
daughter of my Negro Woman Diana.
Fifthly. To Charlotte R. Galloway I give and bequeath
one hundred dollars to be paid to her by my Executors at such times and in such
portions as he may deem most to her advantage.
Sixthly, My Son Robert J Brownfield has already
received his portion neverthelefs as a proof of my affectionate remembrance of
him, I do hereby give to my Son John Brownfield in trust for the sole use and
benefit of the Said Robert J. Brownfield during his life, not to be liable for
debts which he now owes and as effectually as I can by will so dispose, not to
be subject to any debt of his contracting, the following Slaves viz, Marcus,
Violet, and Cuffee, together with the future Ifsue of the said Violet (if any)
- If at the death of the said Robert J Brownfield, he should leave a wife or
Child or Children the property so bequeathed to become theirs and equally to be
divided between them if more then one; but in case he leaves neither Wife nor
Child nor Ifsue living I give the said property after his death to my son John
Brownfield and his Heirs.
Seventhly, To my son John W. Brownfield I give devise
and bequeath all the rest of my property real and personal and the whole
residue of my Estate of every description not already herein mentioned and
disposed of, to him, is heirs Executors end Administrators forever; and I also
appoint him the sole Executor of this my last Will end testament.
Lastly,
I earnestly recommend to my Children’s protection and kindnefs my old
and faithful Servants.
In Witnefs whereof I have hereunto set my
band & seal the seventeenth day of April - in the year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred & thirty seven.

Know
all men by these presents that I Susanna Mann Brownfield of the District and
State aforesaid, being of sound & disposing mind & memory do make,
declare & publish this as a Codicil to my last will and Testament, within
written, hereby revoking so much of the said will as may be contradictory to or
inconsistent with my object & intentions, as exprefsed in this
Codicil.

In
the first place I give & bequeath to my son John W. Brownfield, in trust
for the sole use & benefit of my son Robert J Brownfield during his life,
not to be liable for any debt which he now owes & may hereafter contract,
the following named slaves, to wit, Nanny & her son Fredrick, and
Clementine & her two sons Samuel and Thomas; Should my son Robert J
Brownfield, at his death leave either a wife or children; then I will and
bequeath the said slaves to them & their heirs, forever, share & share
alike, but in the event of my son Robert J Brownfield dying, leaving neither
wife or child or children, then and in that case I will and bequeath the said
slaves at the death of the said Robert J Brownfield, to the children of my son
John W Brownfield, to them, their heirs & afsigns forever.
In
the second place I give and bequeath to my grand daughter Susan P. Brownfield
one slave named Betsey the daughter of my negro woman Diana, together with her future ifsue, to her & her heirs and
afsigns forever.
In
the third place; I will and bequeath to my grand son Robert J Brownfield one
Slave named Jefferson, The son of my negro woman Ethelind, to him, his heirs
and afsigns forever -

witnefs whereof I have hereunto set my hand & Seal this fifteenth
day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & forty.
