Will of Thomas Bracey
The
State of South Carolina
I Thomas Bracey of Sumter District In the
State aforesaid, do hereby make publish and declare my Last Will and Testament
as follows. First I give and bequeath to my wife Eugenia P. Bracey all that tract of land known as
Ketchall Containing forty five acres with the buildings thereon, situate on the
Road leading to Bradford Springs to her and her heirs forever in lieu of dower
and all other claims against my Estate except the following Bequeaths Item
In case my said Wife Shall accept the said bequest in lieu of dower then I
bequeath to my said Wife, the Sum of one thousand dollars to be paid to her by
my Executors either three years after my decease. Item, I give and
bequeath to my uncle Julius P. Waties, my Plantation in Sumpter District Known
as “James Hill” containing about Seventeen hundred acres with the buildings and
other improvements thereon to him and his heirs forever. Item I bequeath
to my Said Uncle all the Slaves derived from my grandfather Judge Waties Estate
namely, Caroline Samuel, Ellen, Solomon, Benjamin, Ned (brother of Flora)
Robertson Elsey Hector Yaniky Sylla Andrew Minda Isaac old May Sarah, Young
May, Israel, Jenny Lewis Judy, Hariet Manson, Little John, Babet, Rose Monday
Emly Mitty Molly Little Dick, Richard Lavinia David Dick Babit (old) Lydia
Hetty Robert Mary Betty March Edgar, Titia Ben, Bob, Patty Prince Phillis
Stephney Nanny Sarah Rose James Leith Bob, Hagar Cesar, Thomas Die Elridge
Charles Amy---Flora Phoebe, Young George Ned James and three Children not named
(of Flora, Die and of Patty) together with the future issue of the females to
him and his heirs forever. Item, I give and bequeath
To
my four Aunts, Miss Anna Waties, Mistress E. Anderson, Mrs Catherine Rees and
Miss Mary Waties the residue of my slave being those derived from the Estate of
My Grand‑father William Bracy the Said Slaves being seventeen in number
with the future issue of the females to them and their heirs share and share
alike, Item I give and bequeath to my said Wife, (also in lieu of dower,
all my Plantation in the State of Mississippi on the Pearl River Known as White
Lands to her and her heirs forever, Item I give and bequeath all the
rest and residue of my Estate real and personal not above bequeathed to my
Cousin Miss Mary B Waties to be paid or transferred to her in two years after
my decease and after payment of my debts(if any) and necessary expenses. Lastly
I nominate and appoint, Major W.E. Richardson, Col John Moore and the said Julius
P. Waties Executors of this my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking and
annulling all former Wills by me at any time heretofore made. Witness my hand
and seal as below attested.

as witnesses thereto (the name of “Judge Waties” being inserted in the Margin
opposite the 24th line from top of first page.)

Codicil
The
State of South Carolina
I Thomas Bracey of Sumpter District do
hereby make publish and declare the following Codicil to my Last Will and
Testament by me published And declared on The twenty fourth day of January last
and by me this Twenty ninth day of Feby A .D. one thousand eight hundred and
forty eight opened for the purpose of adding said Codicil.
First. I hereby ratify and Confirm W.B.
Murray his heirs executors administrators and Afsigns the title and titles of,
all and singular the negro slaves (and the issue of the females) by Me Conveyed
to him on the first day of November last.
Item In the bequests to My Uncle Julius P. Waties
in Case the said Julius P. Waties should depart this life before my decease
then and in such case I will and bequeath the land and slaves intended to be bequeathed
to him to the lawful heirs of his body Share and Share alike In testimony
whereof I have hereunto Set my band And affixed my seal the twenty ninth day of
February A.D. One Thousand eight
hundred and forty eight.
