In the name of God amen. I Moses Christmas ofSumter District, South Carolina, being weak and afflicted in body butof a Sound and disposing mind and memory do make this my last Willand Testament as follows; principally and first of all I recommend mySoul to Almighty God who gave it. hoping through Jesus Christ toreceive forgivenefs for my Sins my body I commit to the earth to bedecently buried at the discretion of my Executor, and concerning myworldly estate I give order and dispose of the same in manner andform following --Item I give and bequeath to my beloved Wife SarahChristmas all of my household and kitchen furniture & my mare tobe disposed of at her discretion, also the use of my plantationduring her widowhood and no longer. Item I give and bequeath unto myfour children, Charlotte, Sarah, Elisa and Moses my plantation,negroes & the residue of my estate to be equally divided betweenthem share and share alike, and should either of my children diewithout lawful ifsue or before they arrive at age the Survivingchildren or child shall share the property of the deceased. And it ismy Will and desire that none of my property be sold, but that mychildren do share it in manner following, i.e. when each of themarrive at age they shall receive their proportionable part of my landand should the increase of my negroes be such as to allow one foreach of my children, in that case it is my will and desire that theyshould be pofsefsed of one of the younger negroes as they Severallyarrive at age; but should the increase not be sufficient, thedivision of the negroes shall be suspended until my youngest childshall arrive at age, and no Sale of the negroes shall be made beforethat period. Lastly I nominate and appoint my friend Gabriel Capersexecutor of this my last Will and Testament in testimony whereof Ihave hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty seventh day ofFebruary in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred andeighteen & in the forty second year of AmericanIndependence.
