I, John Cousar, Minister of the gospel andresident of lower Salem, Sumter District and State of South Carolinabeing in a weak State of body but of sound disposing mind and memoryYet calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it isappointed to all men once to die do make and ordain this my last Willand Testament as follows-

Item 1st.. I order and direct that all my Justdebts be paid.

Item 2nd.. I give and bequeath to theCongregation of Midway of which I have been Pastor a sum notexceeding Forty dollars for the Special instruction of My Negroes. provided there be annual preaching in the Church if Semiannual halfthe above Sum and so in proportion the Money to be paid by myExecutors to the Elders of Midway Church and their Succefsiors inOffice. the Elders to report to my Executors annually that theNegroes have been instructed according to this above Statement-

Item 3rd.. I give and bequeath to the TheologicalSeminary located in Columbia under the Superintendance of the Synodof South Carolina and Georgia Ten Dollars annually until my son JohnShaw Cousar shall arrive at the age of Twenty One Years.

Item 4th.. I give and bequeath To the Generalafsembly Foreign mifsionary Society Ten Dollars annually until my sonJohn Cousar shall arrive at the age of twenty One

Item 5th.. I give and bequeath To the Generalafsembly Domestic mifsionary Society Ten Dollars annually until myson John Shaw Cousar shall arrive at the age of twenty One

Item 6th.. I give and bequeath to my four SonsJohn Shaw Cousar Andrew Flinn Cousar Archibald James Cousar RichardNelson Cousar the whole of the residue of my property both real andpersonal to be divided Equally among them when they shall arrive tothe age of twenty One or Maried -

I nominate and appoint my Friends William WBradley and William Shaw my Sons John Shaw Cousar & Andrew FlinnCousar when they arrive at legal age Executors of this my last Willand and Guardians of my Children -

I authorize my Executors to appoint fivedisinterested free-holders to give off Each Child their proportion ofMy Estate when they Come of age or marry without applying to Courtfor an Order - It is my wish that my Executors give or cause to begiven to Each of my Children a thorough English Education and anyfurther Education they may think Proper.

Whereas I John Cousar Minister of the gospel havemade my last Will and Testament in writing bearing date the 4th dayof October AD 1837 and have thereby dosposed of my Estate Real andpersonal now hereby declare this to be a Codicil to my Said Will tobe taken as part thereof-

I do authorize and empower my Executors topurchase any land adjoining my plantation which may be of advantageto my Heirs - this 5th day of October 1837.
