Will of Margaret Carter

 

 

In the name of God Amen. I Margaret Carterof the state of South Carolina, District of Sumter and county ofSalem, bring thro the abundant mercy of God, the weak in body, yet ofa sound, perfect understanding and memory, do constitute this to bemy last will and testament, and desire it may be received by all assuch--------

First, I humbly bequeath my soul to God, mymaker, beseeching his most Gracious Acceptance of it, thro, the allsufficient, merits and meditation of my most compassionate

Redeemer, Jesus Christ who gave himself to be anattonement for my sins, and is able to save to the uttermost all thatcome unto God by him; being he ever liveth to make intercession forthem, and who, I doubt not, will receive me a returning penitentsinner, when I come to him for mercy. In this hope and confidence, Irender up my soul with comfort beseeching the most glorious trinity;one God, most holy, most merciful and gracious, to prepare me for thetime of my dissolutions and then to take me to himself into thatpeace and rest and incomparable Felicity, which he has prepared forall that fear and love him, Amen. Blessed be God, I give my body tothe earth, from whence it was taken; in full assurance of itsRessurection from thence at the last day.------

As for my burial, I leave entirely at thediscretion of my Exceutors, hereafter named who I doubt not, willmanage it with all requisite prudence: as to my worldly effects, Iwill and positively order that all my debts be paid.------

And first. I give and bequeath unto mybeloved son James Carter five dollars to be paid to him, one yearafter my decease and fifteen dollars to be paid to him every yearfrom my decease during his natural lifetime, for his support to bepaid out of the accumulation of my property (tho divided).

Item. I give and beqeath unto my beloved sonBenjamin Carter, five dollars one year after my death.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my belovedson William Carter, one negro boy named Jimmy, also one bed andfurniture all household, kitchen table and dairy furniture.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my beloveddaughter Margaret Alexander, one bed and furniture together with onehair trunk and all my wearing apparrel.

Item. I give and bequeath to my beloveddaughter Susannah Story, one hundred and fifty dollars, to be paid toher one year after my decease.-----

Item. I give and bequeath the remainder ofmy estate to be divided between my beloved children-------- SayDaniel Carter, William Carter and Margaret Alexander. If the saidDaniel Carter, William Carter or Margaret Alexander, if either ofthem should die without heirs, the property to return equally to thesurviving heirs of Daniel or William Carter or MargaretAlexander-------- also, I constitute, make and appoint, WilliamCarter and Daniel Carter, the Executors of this my last will andtestament and I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disannul, alland every other former testaments, wills and legacies, bequeaths andExecutors by me in anyways before named, willed and bequeathed;ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will andtestament in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and sealthis twenty first day of January in the year of our Lord, onethousand, eight hundred and one, and the 25th year of AmericanIndependence.
