2nd Regiment
Company D SCV

The Sumter Volunteers

The 2nd South Carolina Volunteers participated in as many, if not more, battles than any other regiment on either side of the war. Toward the end of December, 1860, acting under authority of an Act of the General Assembly of South Carolina, passed December 17, 1860, Governor Pickens called for ten regiments of volunteers from the militia of the State to serve for one year.

One of the regiments organized under that call was designated the 2nd (Palmetto) Regiment. It was mustered into State service, April 9, 1861. When the men of the regiment were offered the opportunity of volunteering for Confederate service four companies commanded by Captains W. H. Casson and William Wallace, of Columbia, John D. Kennedy, of Camden, and John S. Richardson, Jr., of Sumter - volunteered.

Captain John Smythe Richardson, Jr. was appointed on April 8, 1861. Richardson was wounded severely in the leg at First Manassas and was disabled from further service. He resigned on May 13, 1862. It is not known who commanded company from May 13, 1862 to June 6, 1862. James DuPre Graham was promoted to captain on June 6, 1862. He was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina on May 2, 1865.

The 2nd South Carolina Infantry became one of the elite units of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. They were organized on January 7, 1861.The company was called up to serve on active duty on April 8, 1861. The unit removed to Richmond on April 26, 1861 and were mustered into Confederate service on May 23, 1861 as the first out of state one year regiment to come to Virginia's defense. The men of Company D of the 2nd SCV came from the Sumter District. From the time of their arrival in Virginia is 1861, the company served on the battlefields of Virginia until they returned to South Carolina in January of 1865 in order to recruit replacements. The company was ordered to go straight to Charleston, with no one to take leave for home or face court martial. Upon the evacusation of Charleston, the 2nd Regiment was consolidated with the 20th Regiment after both were sent to North Carolina. The volunteers from Sumter surrendered with Johnston's forces at Greensboro On April 26, 1865.
