Sacred to the Memory of Captain Stephen Olney
of North Providence, who died Nov. 23, 1832,
aged 77 years, 1 mo. & 11 days.
"He was a regular descendant, of the 5th generation,
of Thomas Olney, one of the first settlers of Providence,
with Roger Williams, and was born and died on the estate
laid out by his said ancestor, as joint proprietor in the
Providence purchase.
Capt. Olney was a soldier of the Revolution: he entered
in the first campaign as a Lieutenant, then in the 20th
year of his age, and was stationed at Roxbury.
When the British left Boston, he marched with the army
to New York, was in the severe battle on Long Island and
others in that vicinity, and in the retreat through the
Jersies. About this time, he was advanced to a Captaincy.
When Lord Cornwallis was ravaging Virginia, a detachment
under the Marquis La Fayette, marched to oppose him, and
Capt. Olney's company formed part of the ... detachment
and other forces ... " |
