He married JANE MARIE WOOD COLBURN March 28, 1847 in Upton, Worchester, Massachusetts, daughter of WESTON COLBURN and ANNA GAGE. She was born September 20, 1821 in Milford, Worchester, Massachusetts, and died June 27, 1904 in Edgerton, Williams, Ohio.

He was raised by his mother and stepfather, George Allen, in Middlebury and Burlington, Vermont. As a young adult he moved to Massachusetts settling in Hopkinton where he was a boot maker. He moved briefly to Windham, Connecticut before settling in Wisconsin by 1855. Upon the advice of doctors he moved west to change climates due to heart disease. He had a grist mill in Beaver Dam and one later in Lodi. By 1870 he was a shoemaker and worked out of Chicago. He was on the road a great deal. He settled his wife in Edgerton, Ohio where their only daughter had moved after her marriage.

He left home and moved to Chicago where he worked in a shoe store of a relative. He was in Chicago at the time of the Chicago Fire. He went west and first opened a shoe store in a tent in Las Vegas, New Mexico. He first bought land there in1879 and added over the years land there and cattle range in Range, New Mexico and Guadalupe County, New Mexico. He was a cattleman for years. He also was in the shoe business including a shoe factory. He seemed to travel a great deal on business in Mexico and the southwest. He moved to Hutchison, Kansas by October 29, 1899 and became a headsman on a local ranch. He had a live stock company in Ness City, Kansas. He moved to Dodge City briefly where he separated from his wife. She moved to Denver to live with her mother. Charles lived in the mountains of New Mexico working some in Rowe for the railroad and later as a laborer.

Notes for HENRY HOWE RATHBUN:
His grandmother, Atherlinda Howe Dyer, sent her grandchildren to private schools. After starting to high school at Manual High in Denver, Henry was sent to Culver Military Academy, Knox County, Indiana where his brother, William Sargent Rathbun was attending. Following graduation in 1911 he went to Purdue University for his freshman year. He had met Estelle Masters through his military school friend and roommate and her brother, John R. Masters. He "went east" as the advice of a banker friend in LaFayette and bought a farm in upstate New York. In 1915 his father, Charles Amory Rathbun, and his mother-in-law, Estelle F. Masters were residing in his home. Over the years, he expanded the farm to over a 1000 acres. His older brother, Charles Amory Rathbun, Jr. moved to Oriskany Falls and lived near Henry's father where he worked on the farm. He owed the general store in Augusta New York at time in partnership with John R. Masters, his brother-inl-aw and was postmaster there from 1915-7. He entered into the farm cooperative movement early in his career. He rose in the ranks of the Dairyman's League Cooperative and became its president on June 21, 1945. In January of 1948 he became the president of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives. He was a personal and political friend of Governor Thomas E. Dewey of New York. He died in Des Moines while on a campaign trip for Governor Dewey. He was going to be appointed Secretary of Agriculture in the President's Cabinet if Dewey was elected in1948.
