Delayed or Omitted birth records and Corrected birth records are created after a formal procedure in the Probate court. These records appear to have begun about 1942. At that time it was required to have an official birth certificate to be employed in any industry supplying the military for World War II. Others had these done when applying for Social Security.

The official index to these records is included with the Probate Birth record index. The file cabinet is (in 2005) in the Probate Court Marriage Department. The Probate birth records (1867-1908) are in two volumes and are indexed on white cards. Delayed records are indexed on yellow cards; and Corrected records on blue-green cards. This index was typed by Cynthia Turk in 2005 from these colored cards. The volume numbers were then added from an index done by Gerri Scott in 1984. Birth dates for those after 1930 were removed, but are on the original cards.

There are many corrections written in red on the original Probate birth records noting the Civil Docket citation. These will be noted in the transcription of those records when they are completed. Some of those corrections were indexed. Most were not. Also many of the indexed corrections are not found in the old original records. Therefore it is important to check both databases for your names.

The Omitted and Corrected Birth Records contain similar information to that on a current birth certificate, plus information about the relatives or witnesses providing affidavits or proofs of the birth accepted by the court. Records generally consist of three or more pages.

They were filed in folders by Civil Docket numbers. It appears that when there was a quantity, they were bound into ten volumes. These volumes were microfilmed decades ago. At that time microfilm was considered adequate as an archive record. Those that were not bound are still in storage under the care of the Probate Court.

To obtain copies of those records which were microfilmed, the volume numbers have been included. This microfilm is available at Morley Library, or through the Lake County Genealogical Society. For later ones with only a Civil Docket number available, the record must be obtained from Probate Court.

Although care was taken to make this database as accurate as possible, it was not independently proofread or compared in any way to original records, except for corrections of obvious errors. The cards themselves inevitably have some errors as well. For instance, the dates were intended to be birth dates, but in some cases they could be dates of record rather than birth. A few were on the wrong color cards. As always, it is recommended that you consult the original record.
