These indentures were very similar. The first one is a transcription, the others are abstracts. The living arrangements were basically the same for everyone here. "So much arithmetick as will include the single rule of three" was basically putting a story problem into an equation to solve.
The original record book First Records of Chagrin Township Copied by William Phillips T. Clerk 1819 from the First Records of the Township of Chagrin April 3rrd 1815. It is held at Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland. The pages are not numbered, and the entries are not necessarily in chronological order. These entries are presented in the order they appeared in the original book. There is little punctuation, and spelling of names is inconsistent. Submitted by Cynthia Turk
And that he the said Tuttle will provide for and allow to the said Joyce Chapman Smith meal drink washing lodging & apparel, and all the necessaries proper & suitable for such an apprentice during the time of his apprenticeship and shall teach and instruct him the apprentice or cause him to be taught and instructed to read & write and so much within [them] as will include the single rule of three & shall give him the said apprentice three months schooling at a common school in the year of 1838 and two months schooling as aforesaid in the year of 1839 and the same in the year of 1840 & at the expiration of said term to give to the said Joyce Chapman Smith five dollars in cash and five dollars worth of saddlers tools also a new bible and at least two suits of common wearing apparrel. It is understood & agreed by the parties that one suit of wearing apparrel as above stipulated is to be a fine suit, suitable to wear to meeting on the sabbath, in witness whereof the said justices have hereunto set their hands & seals the day and year first above written
