Lake County Ohio GenWeb
Overseers of the Poor were assigned to determine which families were not able to support themselves in a manner preventing them from needing assistance from the township. Each township was responsible for the welfare of its residents. When people were likely to need welfare, it was costly. Therefore, the overseers reported these families to the trustees and the constable was requested to "Warn them out" or deliver the warrant to leave the township. This was most often for new residents who did not find work, and those who were causing problems. The names below are taken from the first minute book of the Perry Township Trustees, now located at Western Reserve Historical Society. The handwriting is not always the best, and the ink is mostly brown on now brown paper. The items in [square brackets] are this editor's comments. This work was done in haste and was not proofread. It is possible that there are a few entries missing. Should anyone wish to proofread it with the original, please contact the webmaster. A typical entry would read thus: State of Ohio Geauga County Ss. To either of the Constables of Perry Greeting. Whereas a complaint has been made to us the Overseers of the Poor of the Township of Perry that James ... and their families now residing th this township and that fear said that they may become chargeable to the Inhabitants thereof You are hereby directed to Warn the said persons to depart the township herewith. Here of fact not and of warrant made legal service and return the same with your doings thereon as the law directs. HH Sevet Benj. Norris, Overseers of the Poor. Perry third day of March 1834. Then the constable has his return following, that he served the warrant or could not find the family. This is intended to direct you to the original record, as mistakes and omissions are possible.
