The following transcriptions of Geauga County Indentures were done and submitted by Geauga County Recorder, Sharon Gingerich. They were in a book of Geauga County Indentures discovered when Ms Gingerich took office in January 2009. The book begins with the James Eldred indenture below and ends about 1835. There are many blank pages at the end of the book which measures about 9" x 12" and is in fragile condition. The book is currently in the office of the County Recorder, Chardon, Ohio. Included here are those apprentices and/or masters who were from Lake County townships only.
The transcription is kept as true to the original as possible, with its phonetic spellings and lack of punctuation. They have been proofread with the images.
This Indenture was made this tenth day of February in the year one thousand eight hundred and twenty five Witnesseth that James Eldred son of Ebenezer B Eldred aged thirteen years and twenty two days, by and with the consent of his said father Ebenezer B Eldred of Parkman, County of Geauga & State of Ohio hath of his own free and voluntary will, placed and bound himself apprentice unto Julian C Huntington of Painesville, County and state aforesaid, farmer to learn the art [and] occupation of farming which he the said Julian C now useth, and with him as an apprentice to dwell, continue & serve from the day of the date hereof until the said James shall attain to the full age of twenty one years, to wit: seven years, eleven months & nine days during all of which term of time, the said apprentice, his said master well and faithfully shall serve his lawful commands do and obey, his secrets keep, hurt to his said master he shall not do nor willingly permit it to be done by others but of the same to the utmost of his power shall forthwith give notice to his said master, the goods of his master he shall not embezzle or waste nor lend without his masters consent; at cards or other unlawful games he shall not play; taverns he shall not frequent; matrimony he shall not contract from the service of his said master he shall at no time depart or absent himself without his masters consent but in all things as good apprentice shall and will demean himself toward his said master and all his during the said term and the said master in the said [pg 2] occupation of farming with all things thereunto belonging shall and will teach and instruct or cause to be taught and instructed the said apprentice after the best way and manner he can, and shall also find and allow unto the said apprentice meat drink washing lodging & apparrel both linen and wollen, and shall also teach and instruct or cause to be sufficiently taught and instructed the said apprentice to read and to write a legible hand and so much arithmetic as shall include all the ground rules and also the single rule of three, and at the expiration of said term the said master shall and will find and allow the said apprentice to be his property one new bible and two complete suits of common wearing apparel; and shall and will also pay to the said apprentice the value of one hundred dollars in neat cattle. This Indenture made 26th day of September AD 1825 by and between Eber. D. Howe of Painesville, Geauga County, State of Ohio Printer of the first part and Francis Billette, Frances Billette junior, son of the said Frances Billette, of the place aforesaid of the second part. Witnesseth that the said Francis Billette junior hath this day of his own free will and accord by and with the consent of his said father placed and bound himself as an apprents [sic] unto the said party of the first part to learn the art trade mistery or occupation of a printer which he the said Howe now useth and with him the said Howe agrees to serve as an apprentice for and during the term of four years from the fifth day of September 1825 and during all of which time the said apprentis [sic] his said Master shall well and truly serve in any branch connected with the said trade and any other lawful business as may be required of him (but not to be out of the office more than one quarter of the time) according to the best of his power, wit or ability and shall honestly and obediently obey all the lawful commands of his said Master, his secrets keep and shall at no time embezzle or appropriate any of the property of the said Master to his own use without his consent or suffer it to be done by others but shall at all times take good care of the property of his said master according to the best of his abilities --. And the said Howe on his part in consideration of a faithful performance of all of the above stipulations agrees to pay to the said Francis junior during the first two years the sum of sixty dollars and for the third year the sum of forty dollars and for the fourth year, the sum of fifty dollars to be paid in clothing or such other property he may stand in need of, but in no case is the said Howe to pay the said Francis junior more than ten dollars in cash during the two first years or twenty dollars in cash during the two last years, but all that may remain due for the whole four years at the expiration of the said term of service shall be paid to the said Francis junior in cash - the said Howe is also to furnish the said Francis junior at all times with good and comfortable boarding, lodging, and washing, and mending and as a general rule he is to be kept at the same table with the rest of the family, in health and in sickness and is also to have furnished him all the medical assistance which may be necessary during the term of his said apprenticeship.

This Indenture made the first day of March, One thousand Eight hundred and twenty eight, witnesseth, George Bailey son of Elizabeth Button, aged twelve years old November the 23 1827, by and with the consent of the said Elizabeth his mother of Mentor in the County of Geauga and State of Ohio, hath of his own free and voluntary will, placed and bound himself apprentice unto Charles Tuttle of Mentor County and State aforesaid, Cooper, to learn the said trade mistery or occupation of a Cooper which he the Charles Tuttle now useth, and with him as an apprentice to dwell continue and from the day of the date hereof unto the full end and said term of twenty one years from thence next ensuring and fully to be complete and ended, during all of which term [time?] of twenty one years, the said apprentice his said master well and faithfully shall serve, his secrets keep, his lawful commands gladly do and obey; hurt to his said Master he shall not do, nor wilfully suffer to be done by others; but of the same to the utmost of his power shall forthwith give notice to his said Master, the goods of his said he shall not embezzle, or waste, nor them lend, without his consent to any,[delete comma] at cards, [delete comma] dice or any other unlawful games he shall not play, taverns[add comma] or ale houses he shall not frequent, matrimony he shall not contract; from the service of his said [missing line?]--- without his said Masters leave; but in all things as a good and faithful apprentice, shall and will demean and behave himself towards his said Master and his during the said term, and the said Master in consideration of the sum of a full set of Coopers tools, and a bible and two suits of common wearing apparrel to him in hand paid by his said apprentice in the said trade mistery or occupation of a Cooper which he now useth, with all things thereunto belonging, shall, and will teach, instruct or cause to be well and sufficiently and instructed after the best way and manner he can and shall and will also find and allow unto his said apprentice meat drink washing, lodging, and apparrel both linen and wollen, and all other necessaries fit and convenient for such apprentice during the term aforesaid and also shall for the space of three months for four years the first four years in a good English School to be instructed in reading, wrighed [or weighed] and arithmatic.

This Indenture made and entered into this twenty first day of Feb. in the year of our Lord, One thousand and Eight hundred and twenty-nine. Witnesseth that Richard Fowler & David Turney, overseers of the poor of the township of Perry in the County of Geauga and State of Ohio, by and with the consent of David Robbins one of the Justices of the Peace for said County and township having put and placed, and do by these presents put and place Jerris Ellis and Samuel Ellis poor boys of the said Township. Jerris Ellis is seven years old, the 9th day of Sept. next & Samuel Ellis is three years old the 6th day Jnyra [sic] next, apprentices to Lemuel Ellis of the township of Perry and County and State aforesaid with him to dwell and serve from the day of the date of these presents until the sd. apprentices shall accomplish the full age of twenty one years, during all which time the sd. apprentices his said master shall faithfully serve on all lawful business according to his powers, wit, & ability; and shall honestly orderly and obediently in all things demean and behave himself well towards their said master, and all his doings the sd. term and the sd. Samuel Ellis for himself his Executors and administrators doth covenant and agree to and with the sd. overseers of the poor, and each of them and each of their successors in office for the time being, by these presents, that the said Samuel Ellis the said apprentices in the trade of farming at the discretion of the said Samuel Ellis each of which he now causeth, shall and will instruct or cause to be instructed and during all the time aforesaid, find, provide, allow unto the sd. apprentices sufficient meat, drink and apparel, washing lodging mending, and all other things necessary and fit for an apprentice and shall cause such apprentices to be taught and instructed to read, write and cypher, so far as the rule of three direct, and also shall and will so provide for the said apprentices, that they be not in any a charge to the township of Perry or inhabitants thereof but of and from all charge, and shall save the township harmless and indemnified during the said term and at the end of said term make, provide, and deliver unto the said apprentices two suits of good clothes each, one for winter and the other for summer, and the said Lemuel Ellis shall not be under obligation to give anything else, save what is above written.

This Indenture made this nineteenth day of February, A.D. 1831 between Elias Randall, Levi Kerr and Russell Hawkins Trustees of the township of Mentor in the County of Geauga and State of Ohio with the consent and approbation of Warren Corning Jr., one of the Justices of the Peace in and for the aforesaid township of the one part and Solomon More, of the township of Chagrin in the County of Cuyahoga and State aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the said Trustees have and by these presents do with the consent and approbation of said Justice of the Peace, place and bind out Phebe Galloway, a poor girl, aged six years, eleven months & 9 days/daughter of Daniel B. Galloway & Mahitible Galloway, of Mentor Township aforesaid who are unable to support their child/ as a servant to the said Solomon Moor, to live with and serve him for the term of eleven years -- months, nine days from the date of these presents, that is to say until she the said servant shall arrive to the age of eighteen years, which the said Trustees are informed and believe will happen on the first day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand, eight hundred and forty two, - if the said Phebe Galloway so long lives; and the said trustees do by these presents give unto him the said Solomon Morse [sic], authority, power and rights to and over the said Phebe Galloway and her service during said term, which by the laws of this state a Master hath to and over a lawful indented servant. - And the said Solomon More on his part, in consideration thereof, doth promise, covenant and agree to and with the said trustees, and each of them, their and each of their successors in office for the time being, and with the poor girl, each by himself and herself respectively to teach and instruct her the said servant, or cause her to be taught and instructed to read, write and cypher so far as to include the single rule of three; and also to train her to the habits of obedience, industry, and morality, and provide for and allow to her meat, drink, washing, lodging and wearing apparel for summer and winter; and all other necessaries proper for such servant during the time of her service as aforesaid; and at the expiration thereof shall give to the said servant a new bible and at least two suits of common wearing apparel.

This Indenture witnesseth, that John Minkler, of the township of Painesville, County of Geauga and State of Ohio, by and with the consent of his Guardian Solomon Kingsbury, as testified by his signing of witness hereunto; hath put himself, and by these presents doth voluntarily, and of his own free will and accord, put himself apprentice to Andrew Arbukel of the same place, tanner and currier; to learn his art, trade and mystery and after the manner of an apprentice, to serve him from the day of the date hereof, for and during the full end and term of six years & 14 days from the 26th day of May A.D. 1831. During all which term the apprentice, his master faithfully shall serve, his secrets keep, his lawful commands every where gladly obey. He shall do no damage to his said Master, nor see it done by others without telling or giving notice thereof to his said Master. He shall not waste his said Master's goods, nor lend them unlawfully to any with his own goods, nor the goods of others, without licence from his sd. Master; he shall neither buy nor sell; he shall not absent himself day nor night from his said Masters service without leave; nor haunt ale houses, taverns, or play houses; but in all things behave himself as a faithful apprentice ought to do, during the sd. term. And the said Master shall use the utmost of his endeavours to teach or cause to be taught or instructed the sd. apprentice, in the trade or mystery of a tanner and currier and procure for him sufficient meat, drink, apparel, lodging and washing, fitting for an apprentice during the said term of six years and fourteen days, and give him within the said term ten months of schooling of fourth part of which is to be in the last year of said term, and when he free, to give him two suits of clothing, one of which is to be entirely new. And for the performance of all and singular the covenants and agreements aforesaid, the said parties bind themselves each unto the other firmly by these presents.

This Indenture made this eighteenth day of February in the year one thousand eight hundred and thirty two Witnesseth that Stephen O. Lockman aged fifteen years five months and twenty six days, Ward of Sam'l Griffeth his Guardian of Painesville Township, in the County of Geauga and State of Ohio, hath of his own free will and accord and with the approbation of the said Sam'l Griffeth his Guardian, placed and bound himself an apprentice unto Amos Wilmot, Sadler and harness maker of Painesville Township in the County and State aforesaid to learn the art trade and mystery of a sadler & harness maker, which the said Wilmot, now useth and with him the said Amos Wilmot as an apprentice to dwell and serve for and during the term of five years, six months and five days which will be until the 23rd day of August in the year 1837, at which time the said Stephen O. if he so long lives, will be twenty one years of age, during all of which term the said apprentice his master well and faithfully shall serve in all such lawful business as he shall be put unto by his said Master, according to the best of his abilities and honestly and obediently behave himself towards the said Wilmot and honestly and orderly towards the family of the said Wilmot. And the said Wilmot on his part doth covenant and agree to and with the said Guardian and Ward respectively and jointly to teach and instruct the said Stephen O. or otherwise cause him to be well and sufficiently instructed and taught in the art, mystery, trade and occupation of a sadler and harness maker after the best way and manner that he can and that he the said Wilmot will provide for and allow to the said Stephen O. meat, drink, washing, lodging, and apparel, and all the other necessaries proper and suitable for such an apprentice during the time of his apprenticeship; and it shall be the duty of said Wilmot to school the said Stephen O. six months in a good common school; three months of said schooling to be some time in the fore part or middle of his term of service; the other three months at the close of his apprenticeship; and at the expiration of his the said Stephen O. term of service, the said Wilmot shall give unto the Stephen O. at least two good suits of common wearing apparel. It is further understood that what schooling the said Stephen O has had forms a part of the first three months
some time the fore part of his term of service, and the other three months at the close of his term of service as above stated and also as respects the clothing it is agreed that it shall consist in two common every day suits of clothing and one Sunday suit, the cloth for his coat to be worth four dollars and fifty cents per yard, and the rest of said suit in proportion, and further if the said Stephen O shall well and faithfully serve his term out, the said Wilmot shall give unto the said Stephen O. five dollars in cash, and ten dollars worth of tools. It is further that the last three months schooling may be any time within the last year of his service, and for the faithful performance of the above we have severally set our hands and seals the 18th day of Feby. eighteen hundred and thirty two in the Village of Painesville, Geauga County & State aforesaid in the presence of:

This Indenture made this 15th day of May A.D. 1832. Witnesseth that Horace Castle aged seventeen years, six months and one day, ward of Samuel Griffith of Painesville Township in the County of Geauga & State of Ohio, hath of his own free will and accord, and with the approbation of the said Samuel Griffith, his Guardian, placed and bound himself an apprentice unto Amos Wilmot, Sadler and harness maker, of said township & County & State aforesaid to learn the art, trade, mystery and occupation of Saddle and harness making, which he the said Amos Wilmot now useth and possesseth, and with him the said Amos Wilmot as an apprentice to dwell and serve for and during the term of three years, five months and 29 days which will be until the fourteenth day of November A.D. 1835, at which time the said Horace A. Castle (if he so long lives) will be twenty one years of age. During all which time the said apprentice his said Master well and faithfully shall serve in all such lawfull business as he shall be put to by his said Master, behave himself towards the said Amos Wilmot & honestly and honourably [sic] towards the family of the said Amos Wilmot. And the said Amos Wilmot on his part doth covenant and agree to and with the said Guardian & Ward respectively & jointly to teach and instruct the said Horace A. Castle, or otherwise to cause him to be well and sufficiently instructed & taught in the art & mystery of saddle & harness making after the best way & manner that he can: And that the said Amos Wilmot will provide for and allow to the said Horace A. Castle meat, drink, washing, lodging and all other necessaries proper & suitable for such an apprentice during the time of his said apprenticeship; and also pay him the sum of thirty five dollars for each year for clothing, or otherwise to provide the same amount or worth of clothing as he [sic] said Horace shall need them. In witness whereof the said parties have hereunto set their hands & seals this 15th day of May 1832.
