Sequential Index
On February 21, 1919 The Painesville Telegraph published an extra large issue that
included a 32-page insert describing several of the communities in Lake County. The
first page banner headline proclaims, “City of Painesville Awakening to Its
Possibilities; Is County Seat of Lake County; Citizens Unite for a Greater Painesville.” The insert contained information about selected businesses, schools, churches, and
government bodies. The selected businesses included might possibly have paid a fee to
be included with an article of advertisement, as most of these businesses appear in ads
in the first 8 pages of the issue as well as in the issue from the previous day. This resource includes a complete indexing of the names of persons and entities
that appeared here along with directions to help locate the articles. The table below and
the following three indexes should help the researcher locate the articles. The informational and entertaining insert was printed without page numbers. In
this resource, the pages are identified by the headline in the top left corner of each page
and also assigned a page number for easier reference. Index 1 is an alphabetical listing of persons whose names appear in the 32-page insert and
the page number on which they are located. A number in brackets following an individual’s
name indicates the number of times that name appears on a given page if it appears more than
once. If a name appears on more than one page, there is a separate listing in the index. Then
by referring to Index 3 and scrolling to the correct insert page number, the leading headline on
the appropriate page and the specific article headline are identified. Index 2 is an alphabetical listing of businesses. A number in brackets following a name
indicates the number of times that name appears on a given page if it appears more than once.
If a name appears on more than one page, there is a separate listing in the index. Then by
referring to Index 3 and scrolling to the correct insert page number, the leading headline on the
appropriate page and the specific article headline are identified. Index 3 is a sequential index of all 32 pages. Since the pages are not numbered, a partial
title of the first article on each page is listed next to the page number. The next column lists
the first few words of the article in which each name is located. If there is an organization or
business linked to the name, this will be listed in the next column. Miscellaneous remarks are
in the “Comments” column. Where is the Painesville Telegraph microfilm? The insert was published as part of the February 21, 1919 paper, following page 8 of that issue.
It is included in the microfilm for the Painesville Telegraph in the box covering the dates
January 2, 1919 to June 30, 1919. This information is available for viewing and copying at
Morley Library in Painesville, Ohio. It is also included in the digital version on Google News. under Painesville Telegraph. Notes about this project. This valuable informative February 21, 1919 insert was noticed by Sally Malone,
Genealogy Specialist for Morley Library, while answering queries for out of town researchers.
When the newsletter editors were looking for new informational articles that would be useful
to genealogical researchers, she suggested that an index of this insert would be a valuable
addition to the local history collection. This insert was indexed in July, 2008, by Marianne Wiley, a Lake County Genealogical
Society member and LakeLines co-editor. A list of individual names was published in the
October 2008 LakeLines, the newsletter for the Lake County Genealogical Society, along with
the following article. Life in Lake Co. in 1919 On February 21, 1919 The Painesville Telegraph published a 32-page insert describing several
of the communities in Lake County. The insert contained information about selected businesses
(the ones included might possibly have paid a fee to be included with an article and an
advertisement), schools, churches, and government bodies. There were also short articles
pertinent to that time period. When you read the three “shorts” below that appeared in the insert,
you will see that the areas of concern at that time—how your child is dressed, safety when
parking your car, and supporting those in the military—are rather similar to ours. The names,
faces, and tangible items might have changed, but the focus of the apprehension still remains
similar. Guimpe Question Solved p.23 Most mothers know the difficulty of making a guimpe fit on a
restless child. Even when apparently well cut and fitted it will rise in an ugly fashion with each
movement of the child. One mother has solved this difficulty in a way that may not be known to others. She cuts
her small daughter’s guimpes to the waistline or as long as her underwaist and finishes the edge
with a row of buttons. To the buttons can be fastened the drawers and petticoats. Not only does the weight keep
the guimpe frock from “riding” but it is much more comfortable on warm days not to have the
three thicknesses of underwaist, guimpe, and frock. The guimpe need be made of fine material only as far as it shows beyond the yoke of the
frock. Below it muslin, nainsook, or other material used for underclothing can be substituted. [Ed. Note: A guimpe is a vestlike piece of lace or similar material, worn at the neckline of a
low-cut dress.] Do These Things for Thy Conscience Sake p.9 If you must leave your car standing on the street instead of in a garage: ** Lock it. ** Even a poor lock will sometimes stop a thief long enough for him to be stopped. ** Remove valuables. ** Don’t leave your billfold or your overcoat in an open car. ** If the car is stolen and the thief caught, don’t lay down on the prosecution. ** Steel your mind against crocodile tears and pleas for mercy. The thief knew it wasn’t his car;
see that he is justly punished. The Boys in Service Want Pictures from Home p. 5The returning heroes, the boys from the
front, from “over there” all say that letters, papers and anything from home is welcome, but most
of all what they prize are photographs. We have it directly from those who have been with the men in action that the things they
prize most are the pictures of home folks which they carry with them always. To be happy he must have the individual interest of those at home—their letters and their
pictures—these will bring a smile to his face and a joy to his heart in the most trying times—and
when all other means fail. If every mother or father of a boy in the service were to send photographs to that
boy—and they all should—they would go far toward supplying what he cannot otherwise
get—home influence. Explains How to Get Set for Spring Drive p.9 In getting set for the spring drive by going over
your car, it is important to give some attention to last season’s spare tubes. Inflate the old emergency tube to some fifteen to twenty pounds and put aside for twenty-four hours. If it has lost any pressure at the end of that time, submerge in water and examine
carefully for bubbles created by escaping air. If the deflation is due to weakness of the inside
spring air check in the valve stem put in a new one. Motorists often take the emergency tube out of the tool box and inflate it for use, only to
find that it will not hold air. This is due to carelessness in putting the tube in the box or under
the seat without taking measures against having it frayed and scuffed on the folded edge. To
prevent this, take out the inside valve air check, roll the tube tightly to force all the air out,
replace the valve inside and screw it down firmly. Then lay the tube flat, fold to convenient size,
wrap in a neat package with heavy wrapping paper and secure with string or rubber bands. Listed here are the names of the people who appeared in this insert. At Morley Library is a more
elaborate index with instructions on how to find the names. The 32 pages of the insert are not
numbered so the index will be essential.
