Madison Dock Road Cemetery
(Currently Inactive)

Dock Road Cemetery is located on the east side of Dock Road just north of Chapel Road. This road led to the Madison Dock, early called Ellenburg, at Cunningham Creek, now Arcola Creek. This major port had a government lighthouse in pioneer days, and a shipbuilding industry. The iron ore was rich in the area, and a furnace was located on Arcola Road (extension of Dock Road) just south of the North Ridge Road. This area was a thriving industrial complex in its very early settlement.

The book Ohio Cemeteries suggested that the cemetery is on the Old Moore Farm.

The ca 1940 WPA map lists the cemetery as established in 1827, the property as formerly owned by Elder J. Allen, and turned over to cemetery trustees in 1840.

We find a deed in Geauga County Deed Record Vol. 26, pg 67 & 68 signed 3 February 1837 and recorded 16 June 1838 from Willard Allen and his wife Eliza for $20.00 to Thomas Blair, Samuel Pancost, James Gage, Thomas King, Wm. Rossman, James Courtwright & Julius Mixer of Madison. This is a piece of land to the north of James Courtrights land, measuring 10 ½ rods by 4 rods, "containing 42 rods of land which is now enclosed by a fence, for the express purpose of a district burying ground for district No. 1, as it now stands bounded on the town book in Madison."

In 1840 the property surrounding was owned by Willard Allen purchased from Cyrus Cunningham (Geauga County Recorder's Deed Book Vol. O pg 439), and later returned to Cunningham at sheriff's sale. (Lake County Recorder's Deed Book Vol. K pg 473 May 1, 1854)

A very small strip of 0.014 acres of land at the east end of the cemetery was added from Don E. and Carol T. Stallard on 19 Jan 2000 "to be used exclusively for burial lots for the Grantors, members of their immediate families, and the Grantors' direct descendants." (Lake County Recorders Deed 200022443, filed electronically.)

This quaint little cemetery has a split rail fence by the road. The stones set back some from the road. It appears as an old graveyard. The oldest death date on a stone is July 10, 1827, that of Charlana Turney Gage, wife of James Jr., in the 28th year of her life. The most recent burial in this now (except for Stallards) inactive cemetery was Flora Brockway in 1969.

Although the WPA map shows a road up the center of this deep but narrow graveyard, the inscriptions were read as one section. The rows were read from west to east and the stones from north to south. Readings were proofed in 2000.
