Paine Road (Paine Hollow, Nighman) Cemetery

From Debbie Kinyon and Pat Greene's book, History of Leroy, second edition, on page 48:

Established in 1828, it was added to four years later to create a total of ½ acre divided into sixty-four lots. There haven't been any burials since 1870. It is located on the south bluff of Paine Creek at the end of Carter Road. The old road used to extend to the edge of the cemetery. Henry Paine was buried here, but when his wife died years later, his remains were exhumed and laid to rest again next to his wife's at Evergreen Cemetery in Painesville, The Paine family buried four of their children here and at Paine Hollow as well. Two infants, a three and a five year-old. A marker placed in memory of Jerome N. Patch, who died Dec. 21, 1828 at age 9 yrs, 1 month and 16 days, reads: "Oh Blessed dust lies here, A sweet and pleasant child, Twas by a stub that I was slain, Remember death while life remains." Paine Hollow Cemetery was vandalized before the Civil War but still exists today. Many stones are damaged or missing. A wooden fence and gate that once surrounded the property is gone.

This lovely secluded wooded area is on what used to be a road with a very steep grade down to the creek. It is a bit of a hike back to the cemetery over the old road, and up the embankment. The Township keeps the weeds mowed.

A deed dated 1 May 1850 releases the dower of wives of the trustees of the Leroy North Union Cemetery Association for a 0.375 acre plot of land at the NE corner of the burying ground. Wives were Sarah A, wife of Abel W. Hutchinson and Laura A., wife of Harry N. Carter. (Vol. H pg 615)

The oldest date on a stone appears to be August 17, 1826, for Ward Paine, son of H.E, & H. Paine. Another stone found in the 1927 reading but now missing or buried or moved, was for Infant Daughter of H.E & E.H. Paine who died January 29, 1821. The most recent death date is July 24, 1872, that of Jane Shaw.

The cemetery was read as one section, the rows were read from west to east, the stones from north to south.

The readings were proofed on 29 September 2000.
