Stickney (Huntoon) Cemetery Section Map Huntoon Cemetery, technically licensed as Stickney Cemetery, is a small one located on the west side of Painesville-Warren Road (S.R. 86) at the top of the rise just south of Gray Road. It is referred to by township employees as the "86" cemetery. Jonathan Stickney and Richmond Clapp deeded the land for this cemetery to Jackson Huntoon and Joseph Harvey (trustees) and their heirs on February 8, 1849. The land is described as "thirty-five hundredths of an acre of land, and being the same land with a small addition which has heretofore been enclosed and occupied as burying ground, and for no other purpose." The earliest dated grave marker shows a date of 1828 and is that of Hannah Woodard, Isaac Woodard's wife. Revolutionary War soldiers buried here include Samuel Rogers, Bartholomew J. Vrooman, and Thomas Philbrick. Burials are no longer conducted here, the most recent of the approximately 130, being about 1937. The cemetery is in a wooded area, and the stones are predominately marble and limestone, interspersed with brownstone and granite. The Brewer couple has an unusual asphalt mound. The cemetery is chain link fenced at this time. A very wide path near the center of the cemetery was probably the original entrance road from Painesville Ravenna Road (Rt. 86). Apparently the road contours were flatened, leaving a large drop from the cemetery down to the road. A new short entrance was made at the lower end and a gate constructed there. The area has quite a sharp rise. Both sections were read from the "center" drive. Section 1 rows were read from south to north and the stones from west to east. Section two was read the opposite, the rows from north to south and the stones from east to west. See the map for a clearer understanding.
