Ebenezer Wilson was born at Swansea, Massachusetts (then Rhode Island) May 16, 1745. Enlisted in the War of the Revolution Dec. 8, 1776, to serve in an alarm in Rhode Island, in Capt. Robert Crossman's company, Col. George Williams' regiment.
He was twice married, and came to Ohio in 1812, buying a large tract of land in Mentor, Lake county. It is said of his son, Samuel, who was stationed at Troy, New York, during the War of 1812 that he was the "Uncle Sam" from whom the United States received that title, first as a joke, but "has been in popular parlance ever since."
He lies in Mentor Cemetery.
