The second wedding which occurred in the present limits of Painesville was that of Benjamin Nye and Sarah Smith, both of Painesville by Jesse Phelps, J. P. March 19, 1804. Mr. Nye was quite an early settler of Painesville for we find his name on Col. Eleazar Paine's account book in 1803, and by some of the entries we judge that he was a carpenter for he is charged with files, screws, and two gimlets. He was probably the first carpenter of the town.
In 1807 we find that he is taxed for two head of meat cattle, ninety acres of third-rate land in lot 11, tract 2, which is east of the river, Evergreen Cemetery is now in that lot.
His bride, Sarah Smith, we believe was the daughter of John Smith, who, it is said, built the first house in the village of Painesville, at the Marshall place about 1803.
