Obituaries of early Pioneers

A GOOD MAN GONE! EBENEZER MARRY, one of the oldest and most esteemed citizens of the Milan, Erie county, Ohio died on the 2d inst. Judge Merry was one of those rare men who seemed born to be a benefit and a blessing to his kind. In 1797, when about 24 years of age, Judge Merry settled in Mentor, in this county, where he resided several years. From Mentor he removed to Milan in 1814. In early life he was frequently thrown in contact with the Indians, whose confidence he always won by his kind and affectionate treatment. Since his residence in Ohio, the old chief, Red Jacket, on his way west, to attend an Indian council, turned aside to spend a night beneath the hospitable roof of his ancient friend.

Mr. M. while a resident old Geauga, now Lake co. was elected by the legislature an Associate judge of the Common Pleas, and afterwards to the same post in Huron county, both of which he declined. He repeatedly held a seat in the legislature of this state and filled most of the responsible offices of this co. and township.

His funeral was attended by not less than 600 of his neighbors and friends.
