Acknowledgements Special thanks to Lachlan Mackay for encouraging me to do this project and for his advice, help, and support. I am also grateful to the wonderful staff at Lake County Historical Society for their assistance and friendship. Special thanks go to Larry Spence, Kirtland's sexton, for his help throughout the years. Much appreciation to Cynthia Turk, who, as President of Lake County's Genealogical Society in 2000, spearheaded a reading of all Lake County's gravestones and put them on the internet at www.rootsweb.com/~ohlcgs/alphaindex.html. I am very grateful to my husband, Dan, and my children for their patience and support for all the time I spent in the graveyards and doing research.
Who Lived and Died in the Kirtland, Ohio Area.
by Janet Lisonbee
Introduction Thousands of Latter Day Saints came to Kirtland between 1831 - 1844. Some died during that period and some stayed behind when the majority traveled west in 1838. During the early 1840’s, the Mormon population swelled again to about 500 as new converts from the east gathered. By 1845, most of the early saints in the Kirtland area had moved on to Nauvoo. This is a compilation of those who died during that period and those who stayed behind and were buried in their later years in the Kirtland, Lake County, Ohio area. Each saint, where possible, has a short biography and/or period obituary that tells a little about their lives. The obituaries and other sources are faithfully transcribed with the misspellings, punctuation errors, etc. Maps of some of Lake County’s cemeteries are included and known burial places are indicated. A list of early members who are known to have died in the area, but whose exact burial location is unknown, is also included in this work. NAMES in bold type are members or believed to be members of the early church interred in Lake County whereas NAMES that are just capitalized are not members of the church that are interred in this area that are either related to the early members or have been a contributor to the early history of the church in the Kirtland area. Each section gives a history of the cemetery with directions to that cemetery, followed by the names of the early members and others of interest interred there. |
