This was written and submitted by Judy Stebbins. She says, "There are a number of Griffith families in the 1840 Census for Lake, Geauga and Trumbull Counties. I have identified the separate Griffith lines as the families were not all related. My husband's Stebbins family line is related to Dr. Samuel Griffith. (Almosina Flavia Griffith married Dr. Loren Clark Stebbins.) In my researches for Dr. Samuel Griffith, I discovered information on the other Griffith families."
Eli Griffith lived early in Avery, Huron Co., Ohio. Later he lived in the Burton, Geauga Co., Ohio area. He bought and sold several pieces of land in the Mentor area. Eli Griffith was the son of Jesse Griffith and Sarah Russell (2nd wife) all born at Middleborough, Plymouth Co., MA.
Children of Jesse Griffith and Sarah Russell were as follows:
Note: Jesse Griffith family information is from Ancestry.com, undocumented Member Tree of Klibschon family, searching for Jesse Griffith with spouse Sarah Russell : downloaded 7/19/2015.
Regarding Eli Griffith, Redman [Edith Read Redman, The Ancestry of Clarence W. Read, (Chicago, IL: the author, 1979), p. 82] states that
"He [Eli Griffith]was born Plympton, Plymouth County, Mass. in 1750. In 1767 he was in Ware, Hampshire County, Mass. In 1771 he married Amy [last name not given] and they settled on a farm in Granville, Vermont. This land later became part of Charlotte County and then Washington County, New York. During the Revolution he moved his family out of danger to White Creek and then Bennington, Vermont. He fought with Conn., Vermont, and New York troops on various stints. After the Revolution, according to his own account [apparently from the pension application], he removed to Clifton Park, Schenectady County, N.Y., three years later to Mayfield, Montgomery County, N.Y.; then moved to Leicester, Genesee County, N.Y. for several years. After that he moved to Huron County, Ohio, and four years later to Burton, Geauga County, Ohio. In 1823 he moved to Gates, Monroe County, N.Y., and in 1832 was in Freedom, Cattaraugus County, N.Y., and in 1833 back to Gates."
Charles Parker and wife, Hannah, sold Eli Griffith land (Charles Parker at one time lived in Bennington, Vermont). Charles and Hannah were living in Avery, Huron Co., Ohio when they sold the land in Mentor which was the whole of lot 19. Sold on Sept. 18, 1815. Clark Parker and Jabez Wright (Associate Judge) were witnesses. (Geauga Co. Archives, Deeds, Vol. 5 p. 416-417.)
Charles Parker, also, sold land to William Griffith (believe this is the brother of Eli Griffith above) on Sept. 18, 1815. . The land William Griffith bought is in Mentor, Ohio. The land sold was the whole of lot 18 in Mentor. Clark Parker and Jabez Wright (Associate Judge) were witnesses.
Then Eli Griffith and wife, Amy, sold land to William Griffith that is located in Mentor, Ohio, also on November 2, 1815. The land in Mentor was part of lot 19.(Geauga Co. Ohio Archives Deeds, Vol. 5 p. 300-303).
William Griffith's wife is Polly. They sold part of lot 18 in Mentor to Marshall Brunson on Dec. 2, 1815. (Polly may be a nickname for Mercy in which case this may be the brother William, above, with the wife Mercy Warriner.)
Note: There is a Willard Griffith in 1838 selling land (under Squire Eggleston and others, June 18, 1838) in Kirtland, Ohio. Willard is the son of Duty Griffith, Chagrin Falls. Duty is related to a different line of the same Griffiths as Eli Griffith. The name of Willard's wife in the deed is Esther. (Geauga Co. Archives Deed, Vol. 26, p. 260 -261.)
