The many friends of Colbert H. Greer were grieved to learn of his death in Ashtabula, Oh., June 21, 1924 after an illness of only two weeks.
Born in Painesville, April 20, 1858, the son of William F. and Cornelia H. Greer, Colbert Greer was educated in the Painesville public schools, graduating from the high school in 1876. Later he attended La Fayette College.
Following his college course, Mr. Greer went to New York City as a reporter on the New York Tribune. He showed marked artistic ability early in life, and it was not long before he assumed a connection with Frederick Kappel and Company, New York.
It was with this Famous Firm of art collectors that Mr. Greer spent practically his entire life. He traveled through Europe several times, was a visitor in Egypt and Palestine and was widely read and learned on the customs of many races and peoples.
Mr. Greer was a delightful conversationalist, for his wide learning and his ready and very distinctive wit filled his talk with interest. He had truly the artistic nature, and he enjoyed the beautiful to the extent that probably few can understand.
The three years previous to 1923 he spent in France returning to Ashtabula to live with Mr. B.B. Seymour a year ago last May. He and Mr. Seymour had always been close friends.
